91 Pts Robert Parker - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The least expensive cuvee, the 2010 Les Obriers Terrasses du Larzac is a special selection made for American importer Eric Solomon. The brilliant Claude Gros, who also produces what I believe is the best wine of the Roussillon, Chateau de Negly, oversees this unfined and unfiltered beauty made from an intriguing blend of 65% Cinsault and 35% Carignan aged 18-24 months in wood foudres. This much Cinsault usually produces a light wine as well as magnificent roses, but this offering is surprisingly deep. The flowery component of this varietal, combined with deep raspberry and kirsch-like fruit, medium body and an elegant style give this wine a Burgundian sensuality and finesse. I do not believe this remarkable 2010 will age well given its varietal composition, but who really knows? Certainly it is brilliant now and should continue to drink well for 3-4 years. Don’t miss it, especially if you love flowers, raspberries and finesse. "

Description:

"Each of wines from La Peira are expressive of place starting with Les Obriers de la Peira, a blend of Cinsault and Carignan that is mineral, ethereal and aromatic and a striking example of the balance and elegance that these more humble varieties are capable of producing in the right terroir.

La Pèira is the creation of Rob Dougan, an Austrailian-born, London-based musician who purchased his first vineyard in the Terrasses du Larzac in 2004 with absolutely no experience with making wine but he could sense the land’s potential. What he purchased, glacially deposited terraces of gravelly soils, spoke to him, there was something exciting about this land. Together with his wife, Karin they set about creating La Péira unconstrained by what others thought about the commercial potential of the Languedoc but inspired by what these gravelly soils had to say. With rigorous and uncompromising work in the vineyard and non-interventionist winemaking, the true character of this terroir may convey something of its beauty and wildness, something unique and expressive. This involves a meticulous approach to viticulture – very low yields, short pruning, de-suckering, crop thinning, shoot removal, leaf plucking, and green harvesting; the hand picking of perfectly ripe grapes in small cagettes; a double triage and sorting table and the careful élevage of small amounts of wine in new barrels." - Importer
