90 Pts Wine Spectator

"A crisp and minerally red, with concentrated flavors of dark cherry, roasted plum and dried raspberry, layered with rich, spicy notes. White chocolate details show on the finish, accented by hints of pepper. Drink now through 2020. 208,000 cases made." June 2016

#46 Wine of 2016
The Dão region of Portugal is less renowned than the Douro, but quality is on the upswing. Situated in granitic uplands, the vineyards are conducive to making concentrated, minerally, dry reds. This wine is a blend of Tinta Roriz (known as Tempranillo in Spain), Touriga Nacional and the obscure Alfrocheiro, which brings deep color and fruity aromas to the mix. The wine aged six months in French oak. Cabriz consistently excels in the under-$20 range. 208,000 cases made.

Description:

There is a great versatility to this wine, not to mention great affordability.

Coming from the Douro's southern neighbor, the Dao, this central region is protected by mountains and cut through by the Dao River. The granite-rich soil gives wines crystalline minerality, as experienced in this red blend.

The 2014 Quinta De Cabriz Dao offers the kind of complexity we don't often expect in wines this affordable. Already blessed with beautiful climatic conditions, Dao has seen a surge in quality without a rise in prices.

As Wine Spectator notes, Cabriz consistently excels in the under-$20 range.

The Quinta de Cabriz Dao is a blend of the indigenous varieties Tinta Roriz (known as Tempranillo in Spain), Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro and is aged in French oak. This deeply-colored red wine is medium-to-full-bodied, a bit lighter than wines from the Douro, with impressive concentration of flavor.

"Intense ruby color. Fruity odor composed mainly of fresh red berries, woodland fruits, jam, spices and a slight hint of roasted flavors. It has a fruity, soft, elegant and harmonious flavor.

Quinta de Cabriz is located between the two main rivers that cross the Dao region, the Mondego and the Dao. It is a secular "quinta" (farm) so along with a 17th century manor house there is also a chapel." - Winery
