92 Pts Josh Raynolds - Vinous Media

"Bright ruby. Intense, mineral-accented aromas of blackberry, floral pastilles and Indian spices, along with a hint of cola. Spicy, palate-staining dark berry flavors show impressive density, with smoky minerality providing sharpness and lift. Packs a serious punch on the long, youthfully tannic finish, which echoes the mineral and berry notes. Possesses the depth and structure to age; I'd keep my hands off of this one for at least a few more years." Reviewed December 2014

Description:

"This is one of the most wild and complex wines we have made. The wine is a mix of incredible spice and earth with deep rich fruit and mouthwatering acidity. The nose is teeming with lavender, pomegranate, forest floor, black tea and orange peel and is followed by wild strawberry, and guava. The palate is cool, refreshing and deceivingly long. There are also some of the classic Bien Nacido flavors throughout like white pepper and lavender. This wine should age very well. We recommend decanting if you plan drink it now.

Bien Nacido is currently the only vineyard we source fruit from outside of Sta. Rita Hills and the Sonoma Coast. It has a rich and storied history as one of the oldest and most accomplished vineyards in Santa Barbara County. All the fruit for this wine comes from N block and Q block. These two blocks are in the middle of the Santa Maria Bench, a unique alluvial formation that gives Bien Nacido its unique character and quality. This wine was picked on 4 different days between September 7th and 14th. This allowed us to make sure that every grape comes in perfectly ripe. The grapes were destemmed and went through a 4-day cold soak before fermentation. They were pressed into French oak (30% new) and aged for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered." -Winery

About the Estate
"LUTUM was born from a shared vision between Bill Price, entrepreneur and owner Price Family Vineyards, and winemaker Gavin Chanin. Their wine focuses on small-production, single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from prime vineyard sites in California. The name LUTUM is Latin for dirt or soil, referencing their mission to make wines that express these great sites, with little to mask the vineyards’ natural character. Together, they are the Bards of LUTUM." - Winery
