"This wine is off dry, ripe and fruity. Orange peel and ripe perfumes go with opulent hints of honey and light acidity that gives delicious lift. It should age, so wait until 2017." Reviewed 4/1/2015 |
90 Pts Wine Spectator |
"Exuberant flavors of mango, pineapple and grapefruit granita are layered in this lightly sweet, elegant version, which shows accents of Thai basil, clover honey and spice, with racy acidity and smoky mineral notes. Drink now through 2020." Reviewed October 31, 2014 |
Description:
The << E >> stands for Epfig as this Gewürztraminer is the result of a blend of several plots located in and around the village of Epfig. The soils are made of pebbles, therefore they are light soils with good air flow, that heat up quickly which allows Gewurztraminer to ripen perfectly. These Gewürztraminer, like all the domaine's vines, are farmed using Organic and Biodynamic methods. Gewürztraminer at the Domaine is always made in an off-dry style. Indeed we pick it later than the other varieties, with a balance similar to most of Alsatian << vendanges tardives >>, yet while the vine is still feeding the berries with water and nutrients so before the fruits start dehydrating. The result is a fruit-driven wine with no << terroir >> ambition, which is the reflection of the variety's heady personality but balanced by a subtle and ethereal freshness. Making a dry Gewürztraminer on our terroirs would mean picking it around 13° of potential alcohol, which we want to avoid since at this stage the sugar and acids might be right but it is not the case of the phenolic elements and seeds. Therefore the risk is high to obtain an unbalanced wine, dominated only by harsh aromas and a green bitterness. That said, in 2014 we were forced to pick the Gewürztraminers earlier than usual, including the parcels on the Fronholz which, being far from the usual vendange tarvide blance that we look for, were blended into the << village >> Gewürz to bring more structure and richness to it, thus compensating the lower concentration of the Vignoble d'E.
