"Although Melini, an estate that groups five farms in Chianti and Chianti Classico, makes much of the fact that it dates back to the early 18th century, it has long been part of the giant GIV company, which has properties in most areas of Italy. Of the five Chianti properties, La Selvanella, in the commune of Radda, is probably its flagship. First made in 1969, this Riserva is a Chianti Classico of the old school, aged for around two years in large casks. It is the most traditional of its Riservas...the company has maintained high quality at its top estates.

Masculine and generous with forest fruit aromas. Rustic with flavors of leather and wild game and gripping tannins. Plump and intense, this has great texture and spice on the finish. It is textbook Sangiovese -complex yet elegant. Masses of ripe berry fruit and strong spicy notes. Balanced and well-rounded with cleverly judged tannins and a warm, ripe aromatic finish; a stylish wine."

"Chianti Classico Riserva La Selvanella 2010 has a clear, dark, ruby color; full, complex bouquet with strong notes of red fruits, irises, and hints of vanilla. The flavor is full, generous, warm and savory with an elegant aftertaste of woodland undergrowth and toasted almonds. It can be kept longer than usual, and improves with time.

La Selvanella Chianti Classico Reserva is Fattorie Melini's top wine. Debuting in 1969, La Selvanella was the first single vineyard wine from Chianti and one of the first to appear in Italy as a whole. Since then, this wine has been a veteran of Tre Bicchieri, receiving the honor in the 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2006 vintages.

Terroir: The La Selvanella vineyard, one of the best crus in the Classico area, consists of 123 acres within the commune of Radda, halfway between Panzano and Volpaia. Planted entirely to Sangiovese Grosso, the vineyard is Guyot and cordon speronato-trained and sits at 1,300 feet above sea level with southwestern exposition. The terroir is a mixture of soils dominated by alberese, weathered sandstone.

Fattorie Melini is the top range of Tuscan wines from Melini, Chianti's historic estate since 1705. The Fattorie line uses only 100% estate-grown grapes from Chianti Classico's most renowned vineyards, creating Italy’s benchmark wines, like the revolutionary "La Selvanella"." - Importer
