91 Pts Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The 2009 Caburnio (65-25-10 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet and Merlot) is a full and generous wine with layers of red cherry, light spice and leather that are delivered in quick succession. Sharp freshness cuts to the back of the palate and gives this wine an incredibly vibrant feel. The menthol reinforces those sensations and peppermint-like tones also present here. At this price, this is an unbelievable steal. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022." (08/13)

Description:

Wine:
"Following the style of the previous vintage, the leading features of Caburnio 2009 are elegance and finesse. A climatically very balanced year, without excessive heat during the last ripening phase, enabled us to create a very fresh version of Caburnio, in which a vibrant acidity conveys tone to the excellent ripeness and smoothness of the fruit. Notes of pepper, flint, black olives, grilled spices and subtle nuances of rose add complexity to a fruit led by currants and blackberries. The persistent finish refreshes the palate, leaving pleasant mineral memories."

"Sustainable. Hand harvested. Non-interventionist. Wines are produced as naturally as possible, using indigenous yeasts, and allowing the fermentation to occur spontaneously. Minimal sulfur dioxide. Varietals are de-stemmed, crushed, and vinified separately in temperature controlled (18-28 degrees Celsius) stainless steel vats, one for each block. The fermentation lasts approximately 8 days. Maceration on skins for 18-20 days, depending on the varietal, with frequent pumping over. MLF in stainless steel vats. Transfer to maturation vessels, which are 50% stainless steel and 50% French oak, with 70% two year old and 30% new barrels, by gravity around the end of December. Wines are racked twice, once in June, and then again in November, prior to the final composition of the blend. Maturation in barrel/vat lasts 12-14 months. The wine is un-fined and unfiltered prior to bottling." - Winery

Winery:
"Tenuta Monteti is in Tuscany in the southern part of the Tuscan Maremma, in the surroundings of the small town of Capalbio, on the hills, just behind the hill named Monteti. It is 15 km from the sea in a straight line. The altitude goes from 100 to 140 mt above sea level. "

"Monteti is the name of the hill where part of the estate lies. The hill is exactly in front of the vines and protects them from the wind that comes from the sea. It is 425 mt (1394,36 feet) high and on the top there are ruins of roman and medieval settlements."

"The Tenuta Monteti is a family owned property. The initiative is the result of the personal engagement of Paolo Baratta, who personally runs the business (with the full support of Gemma and Eva). Carlo Ferrini has been at his side since the beginning and now still has the key role of consultant, with the support of Gioia Cresti. Roberto Rossi is responsible of the vineyard operations. Andrea Elmi is the oenologist of the Tenuta, responsible of the cellar and of the commercial branch." -Winery
