93 Pts James Suckling - Jamessuckling.com

"This is gorgeous and reserved with sweet strawberry, delicate spice and cedar character. Medium to full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a clean finish. Hints of mineral too. This is truly exciting. Drink now."

Description:

"Ritual Pinot Noir is a meticulous selection of specific vineyard lots and barrel selections from 50 acres of Pinot Noir planted in the coolest sections of our Casablanca Valley estate. Dijon clones 115 and 777, planted at high density on selected rootstocks make up a large portion of the blend, along with fruit from own-rooted older vines. The family chose to plant Pinot Noir in a cool, lower elevation plateau on the estate that enjoys morning fog several times a week and is cooled in the afternoon by winds from the Pacific. The area has loamy soils with sand and good drainage. Vines are densely planted at 2,000 vines per acre and they are managed to one cluster per shoot, yielding fewer than 4 tons per acre. The vineyards enjoy a variety of sun exposures and canopies are managed carefully to avoid sunburn and create even ripening. 3 distinct vineyard sites contribute different dimensions and layers to the final blend:

Estero: Coolest block delivers fresh fruit characters, red fruit, bright acidity and spicy notes.
Ladera: Sandy soils, medium fertility and good water drainage. Lively aromas of cherry and cranberry and elegant mid-palate.
Mauco: Decomposed granitic soils, slightly higher temperatures. Fruit characters of cherry cola and plum.

Ritual Pinot Noir is the result of Agustin Huneeus quest to produce world class Pinot Noir from Casablanca valley. Partnering with esteemed American winemaker, Paul Hobbs and applying the same time-honored viticulture and winemaking methods as those used in Burgundy, he set out to produce Pinot Noir of superior quality, structure and elegance. Fruit for this wine is selected from 3 distinct vineyard sites within our Casablanca Valley estate. Hand harvested in small batches in the cool morning fog, fruit from each vineyard contributes unique qualities to the finished wine in the form of character, dimension and personality. Together, they create a beautiful, elegant expression of Pinot Noir from Casablanca Valley." - Winery
