Description:
This 3 pack includes one bottle of each: 2011 Sette Ponti Oreno, 2006 Il Marroneto Brunello Di Montalcino, and 2010 Ampeleia Kepos.
2011 Sette Ponti Oreno:
"There is a purity of fruit in this young Tuscan red, with flowers, citrus fruit and currants. Full body with firm, silky tannins that are ultra-fine and wonderfully polished. The structure builds to a racy finish. This is a Bordeaux blend that is all in harmony. Give it time: the tannins and fruit will melt together. Try in 2016." (11/13) - 96 Pts James Suckling
"Though rich, this red is also vibrant, balanced and full of generous black cherry and blackberry flavors. Hints of spice and smoke add accents to the long, satisfying finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2015 through 2025. 6,500 cases made. -BS" (10/13) - 92 Pts Wine Spectator
Wine:
"Spicy aromas of black fruit and touches of chocolate dominate the nose and palate. The wine is full-bodied, with supple tannins."
"The soils that produce the fruit for Oreno are a blend of clay, sand and the stony galestro limestone that is special to Tuscany. Clusters are reduced to one or two per stalk in May to assure maximum quality when they are hand harvested in autumn. In the winery, grapes are hand sorted and destemmed. Fermentation occurs in a combination of temperature-controlled and lined, open-top tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation. Oreno is aged in French Allier barriques and in bottle before release." - Importer
Producer History:
"Tenuta Sette Ponti lies on historic land in the heart of the Chianti zone at the end of the Via del Monte, known locally as the Via dei Sette Ponti, in a beautiful hidden valley. Named for the seven medieval bridges crossing the Arno River on the road from Arezzo to Florence - one of which, the Ponte Buriano, is perceptible in the right far background of Leonardo DaVinci's Mona Lisa - the estate has a storied history. But it has been the dedication and savvy of luxury goods entrepreneur Antonio Moretti that has transformed the 750-acre estate into a multifaceted farm property that is today one of Tuscanyâs most innovative, quality-driven producers of world-class Super Tuscans." - Importer
2006 Il Marroneto Brunello Di Montalcino:
"The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino offers up freshly cut flowers, black cherries, minerals, new leather and menthol in a polished, totally vibrant style that is highly appealing. Over time, the wine's inner sweetness emerges, hinting at what is in store over the coming years. Still quite firm, the estate's Brunello will need a few years in the cellar. It will appeal most to readers who like firm, ageworthy wines. This finish impresses for its focus and overall purity. Smoke, underbrush, tar and a host of other aromas and flavors add complexity on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026." (05/11) - 94+ Pts Antonio Galloni - Vinous
"Good full medium red. Red berries, rose petal, lavender and a whiff of gingerbread on the nose. Juicy, sweet and savory, with lovely intensity and grip. Harmonious acidity energizes the mid-palate and gives definition and cut to the wine's dark berry and spice flavors. Not a silky style but penetrating, firmly tannic, long and built to age. Broad on the back but a bit youthfully tough today and in need of at least several years of cellaring." (08/11) - 91+ Pts Stephen Tanzer - International Wine Cellar
"Plenty of dried flowers, with plums and ripe strawberries on the nose. Full body, with chewy tannins and lots of vanilla. It turns a little dry but should come out right with three to four years of bottle age." (01/11) - 91 Pts James Suckling
"This classic Brunello is slightly more closed aromatically and subdued at first, but opens to deep layers of berry fruit and exotic spice as the wine stays in the glass. Elegant flavors of almond and cassis appear as pretty accents on the long fade. -ML" (04/11) - 90 Pts Wine Enthusiast
"There's a beam of cherry in this tightly constructed red that quickly gets lost in the dusty, even astringent tannins. Fresh and elegant, just on the dry side, finishing long with mineral and tobacco. Best from 2014 through 2022. 500 cases imported. -BS" (02/13) - 90 Pts Wine Spectator
"Crimson, just starting to open up. Sweet cherry confit and cherry liqueur and a note of oak. Touch alcoholic. Ongoing aroma of amarene cherry and dark fruit. Acidity and tannin yet to integrate, but very long, with waves of fragrant dark fruit. Drink from 2014 to 2022. (WS)" (09/11) - 17.5 out of 20 Points, Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages.
Wine:
"A classic and elegant Brunello that is fragrant and fruity on the nose and well-structured on the palate, with a long elegant finish. Pairs well with roasted meat dishes and robust Tuscan recipes." - Importer
Vinification and Aging:
"Fermentation in steel tanks lasting 11 to 12 days. Pumping over the cap is done for the first 2 days. In a mix of Allier and Slavonian casks for 39 months. It becomes an official Brunello after 5 years, which includes the 6 months of rest in bottle." - Importer
2010 Ampeleia Kepos:
"The 2010 Kepos is striking in this vintage. Dark cherries, plums, spices, licorice and tobacco are some of the notes that jump from the glass. Sweet herbal nuances appear later, adding complexity and aromatic lift. This is a hugely intriguing wine from Ampeleia that constantly changes in the glass. The Kepos will be fascinating to follow over the next handful of years as it starts to settle down in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020."
"I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Ampeleia this year. Every time I went back to the wines, I found a new shade of dimension. A gradual conversion to biodynamic farming and an increased use of cement vats are stripping these wines to the bare essentials, and what comes through more often than not these days is pure class." (06/12) - 92 Pts Antonio Galloni - Vinous
"A lovely strawberry and raspberry nose. Aromatic and perfumed. I like the acidity; turns savory. Delicious and clearly outstanding. A Maremma red from Foradori's Elisabetta Foradori from Trentino." (04/13) - 91 Pts James Suckling
"Full, bright ruby-red. Redcurrant and pomegranate on the nose, with spicy and herb notes emerging with air. More wound-up and less fruity than the Unilitro bottling, hinting at sweet red berry and spice flavors with a strong undercurrent of underbrush. Gains flesh with air but this will need a couple years in the cellar to open fully. Finishes firm and very persistent. One of the better Kepos vintages to date." (09/12) - 90+ Pts Ian Dagata - International Wine Cellar
Wine:
"Five Mediterranean grape varieties from the vineyards of Ampeleia di Sotto blended in a single wine. These are the winery's vineyards closest to the sea, where the Mediterranean scrub dominates the landscape permeating the air with its fragrances: this is Kepos, the authentic and natural interpretation of Ampeleia's warmest and most radiant nature."- Winery
Winery:
"In the 60's, Erica and Peter Max Suter, a Swiss couple, bought the abandoned farm and turned it into a rural estate with woods and pastures, breeding sheep and pigeons as well as planting a vineyard; soon the Meleta winery (in Italian Meleto is an apple orchard and the winery's name derives from the orchard on its land) was known for its wine and products. It was at that time that Cabernet Franc and Merlot were brought to Roccatederighi."
"Ampeleia di Sopra: Ampeleia di Sopra:70 hectares, of which 15 hectares of vineyards - Ampeleia di Sopra is the largest land unit of the estate. Placed between 450 and 600 metres above sea level, it is mainly planted with Cabernet Franc. The different exposures, the various soil-types and the climate marked by sea breezes meeting the land's energy - these are the elements that determine the uniqueness of these sites, dominated by chestnut woods. Ampeleia di Sopra includes the "Lo Sbocco" vineyard where the Merlot vines used for Empatia plunge their roots."
"Native to the Near East, the grape varieties brought together in Ampeleia - among many others - took root in the Mediterranean farmlands, contributing to the definition of a fundamental aspect of our cultural identities. Having migrated in Roman times from the Caucasus, through Albania, to Venice, today, Cabernet Franc is also present in Maremma: fruit, spice, elegance and body are the qualities it conveys to Ampeleia. The quintessential Tuscan grape variety, Sangiovese, was already prized by the Etruscans, who named it "Sangue di Giove" - Jupiter's Blood: it imparts its strength and constancy to Ampeleia." - Winery
This wine was also scored 89 Points by the Wine Spectator.
