Description:
This 2-pack includes 1 bottle of 2008 - Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso, and 1 bottle of 2008 - Mater Domini Salice Salentino Riserva.
2008 - Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso
"Best Paleo ever here. Incredible concentration of fruit, yet racy and balanced. The palate is crazy. It's like chocolate olive oil cake. Beautiful fruit, with dark berries, olive leaf and chocolate. Love the texture. The best pure Cabernet Franc on earth? Can't wait to drink it." (08/11) - 97 Pts James Suckling - JamesSuckling.com
"Good full ruby-red. Knockout, extremely fragrantnose combines raspberry, strawberry, Oriental spices, bay leaf, violet and white pepper. Fine-grained, pure and penetrating on the palate, with outstanding density and great energy to the flavors of red berries, aromatic herbs and white pepper. The extremely long, perfumed,palate-staining finish features supple tannins that are in perfect harmony with the wine's fruit. Another great Paleo in the making: I love this wine's vibrant delivery of pure, unadulterated cabernet franc aromas and flavors. A great showing." (09/12) - 95+ Pts Ian Dagata - International Wine Cellar
"Paleo is a landmark Italian expression of Cabernet Franc that is not at all bashful in terms of fullness and richness. Bold fruit and black cherry aromas have been soften by careful oak tones of spice and leather. Structured, firm but also velvety in texture, this wine needs more years to evolve. CELLAR SELECTION" (02/12) - 95 Pts Wine Enthusiast
"Dark red fruit, freshly cut flowers, minerals, spices and sweet herbs are some of the notes that emerge from the estateâs 2008 Paleo Rosso. The Paleo impresses for its vibrant minerality and exceptionally long, focused finish. The 2008 isn't a huge, opulent Paleo, rather it is a wine of more classic proportions built on harmony, of which there is no shortage here. Crushed flowers and sweet spices from the oak are sublime in the empty glass. Paleo Rosso is 100% Cabernet Franc that spent 14 months in French oak, 70% new barriques and 30% 1 year-old 112 liter barrels previously used for Messorio. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028."
"These may very well be the finest wines I have ever tasted from Le Macchiole. There is no question these are the best wines the estate has ever produced relative to the overall quality and potential of the vintage. Over the years this cutting edge estate has been at the forefront of many developments in Maremma and Italy including working with low yields, densely planted vineyards and using small 112 liter barrels for the flagship Merlot, Messorio. Proprietor Cinzia Merli and long-time oenologist Luca d'Attoma have continued to search for ways to improve. These 2008s show the direction of the future. New oak levels are down, the quality of coopers is up and the estate is moving towards larger 500-liter barrels on some of the wines. Le Macchiole has always produced stunning fruit. Now that much of the makeup is beginning to come off the wines it is obvious the estateâs potential is limitless. Nowhere is a return to a more classic style in Italy more evident than at Le Macchiole." (08/11) - 93 Pts Antonio Galloni - The Wine Advocate
"Offers black currant, black cherry and cedar aromas and flavors, with hints of sage. Round and juicy, its tannins are integrated, and the finish lingers. A fruit-driven red. Cabernet Franc. Best from 2013 through 2021. 2,158 cases imported. -BS" (05/11) - 90 Pts Wine Spectator
Winery:
"The wines of Le Macchiole are, for me, one of the major reasons why this district has been so successful." - Lodovico Antinori
"Until the early 1980's, wines produced in Bolgheri were largely focused on quantity over quality. The changes that developed thereafter were largely due to the few producers recognizing the potential of a Bordeaux winemaking model which favored long ageing in small barrels. In 1983, the year when the first specifications for the protection of Bolgheri DOC wines were approved, the late Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli planted the vineyards of Le Macchiole at the foot of the Bolgheri Hills. Six years later, in 1989, the first vintage of Paleo Rosso was produced; Messorio and Scrio produced later in 1994. In 1991, Le Macchiole began working with famed oenologist Luca dâAttoma. The estate focuses on achieving the purest expression of individual varieties, crafting distinct wines of unprecedented quality. Le Macchiole joins Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso as one of the most prestigious estates in Bolgheri." -Importer
"Paleo Rosso is the one that I feel closest to and the one that excites me most. He can pleasantly surprise you And is also the one that will unexpectedly give you the greatest feeling and passion. He enters your soul in a way that is persuasive and intriguing, without ever being excessive in his expressions. " -Winery
2008 - Mater Domini Salice Salentino Riserva:
"This is the kind of wine that makes me love my job every day. You never know when someone is going to bring you something eye opening like this, and I immediately fell in love. The aromatics are so deep and powerful, one sniff was all it took to say WOW. Aromas of crushed rock and herbs combined beautifully with wild strawberry, blueberry and acacia flower aromas. The palate is bold, rich and nicely textured, with great balance. Loaded with complexity and not just fruit character, but great earth tones as well. Slightly tannic on the finish, but air really helps those melt in to the wine. If you were paying $80 to $100 on a wine list, it's still an incredible steal, that's how much I think of this wine." - 95+ Pts Ian Dorin - Wine Library
"The Tenute Mater Domini Salice Salentino Casili is a brilliant blend of Negroamaro and Malvisa Nera. It is pitch black with a rustic nose of dried prune, cassis, tobacco, salted meat, dried berries, forest floor and wood. Big and powerful with raisin and dark fruits on the finish. Focused and well made, a serious value. (Best 2013-2024) - MD" - 93 Points International Wine Report
"Salice Salentino is a commune in southern Apulia that is a DOC as well. Always comprised of a high percentage of Negroamaro (minimum 85%), it is sometimes blended with small amounts of Malvasia Nera, as this wine is here." - Winery
Winery:
"Tenute Materdomini is a young winery located in the Salentino area, close to the town of Lecce. All the vineyards are in the best spot of the region, very close to the seaside at an altitude between 200-300 meters, above the sea level. Perfect characteristics to grow Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. This estate focuses on producing wines traditionally made with the help of modern technologies." - Importer
"Tenute Mater Domini was founded in 2003 through the realization of a business venture by Pierandrea Semeraro, aimed at using the food resources already present in the territory of Salento, particularly those of wine and oil."
"The concept of quality for the company is primarily focused upon modernizing methods of agricultural production, paying particular attention to agricultural innovation, as well as respecting the traditions of the Salento area. The production of our products follows this philosophy âcreating innovation, whilst being aware of our rootsâ."
"Quality is not a subjective parameter, but is rather a philosophy aimed at achieving perfection. It is linked to the goal of not leaving anything to chance, and also to respecting the environment in producing a unique product ."
"The Salento peninsula is characterized by the running of two seas, representing an excellent field of application and experimentation of the concept of terroir."
"Terroir derives from many factors, ranging from the soil and climate, the particular grape varieties, the special features of the land, and above all to the wine tradition in this area." - Winery
