96 Pts Jay Miller - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The 2001 Gran Reserva 904 will not be released for another 3 years. Dark ruby-colored with a garnet rim, it displays a lovely nose of Asian spices, incense, tobacco, balsamic, and blackberry. On the palate it has exceptional depth, layers of spicy black fruit, excellent ripeness, and an elegant personality. Upon release it should continue to evolve for another 5-6 years and drink well through 2040."

"La Rioja Alta was founded in 1890 in Haro, the capital of Rioja Alta, in close proximity to Lopez de Heredia and Marques de Riscal. The Bodega's wines are all blends, there are no single vineyard wines, and all of the wines are produced from estate-grown grapes. During my visit in May, 2010, I had the opportunity to taste verticals of 2 of La Rioja Alta's wines, Vina Ardanza Reserva and Gran Reserva 904. Vina Ardanza's wines are labeled Reserva with three exceptions. In what La Rioja Alta considers the greatest years (there have been three to date, 2001, 1973, and 1964) the wine is called Reserva Especial. There are usually four vintages a decade of La Rioja Alta's Gran Reserva 904. It is made from a blend of Tempranillo and Graciano and aged for 5 years in barrel and 5 years in bottle prior to release." (06/10)

93 Pts Josh Raynolds - Vinous Media

"Deep ruby. Complex, highly perfumed scents of dark berry compote, cherry pit, pipe tobacco and vanilla. Smoky, sweet and focused, offering vibrant black raspberry, bitter cherry and vanilla bean flavors that gain power with air. This doesn't act like a 12-year-old wine! Finishes smooth and very long, with lingering sweetness and gentle, fine-grained tannins." (10/13)

91 Pts Wine Spectator

"The alluring aromas of vanilla, lilac and cedar give way to berry, vanilla and tobacco flavors in this expressive red. Features a supple texture, with firm underlying tannins, while balsamic acidity lends a spicy note to the finish. Drink now. -TM" (09/13)

Description:

"Heady and rich. Gamey then dry. Very vibrant with strawberry fruit. Drink from 2011 to 2020. -JR" (07/13) - 17 out of 20 Points, Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages.

Producer:
"La Rioja Alta has been producing wine at the bodega in Haro's Barrio de la Estacion since 1890, and the quality and consistency of their output over that time has earned them many devotees among the wine cognoscenti. Their reputation really exploded, however, with the release of the 2001 Vina Ardanza Reserva Especial in the early part of 2011. That wine was not only many people's first experience with La Rioja Alta, it was many people's first experience with classic Rioja. 2001 was a vintage that flirted with disaster. All manner of potentially ruinous weather conditions befell the region, including an April frost, inordinate heat, a lengthy drought and, possibly most troubling of all, torrential rainstorms towards the end of the growing season. What didn’t kill the vintage, however, made it stronger, prompting some of the preeminent winemakers in the region to classify 2001 as una cosecha para la historia, a historic harvest. The wines from 2001 are dark-hued and concentrated, with spectacular aromatic complexity. The closest analogue is 1964, a vintage so profound that many doubted they would ever see its equal.

The name 904 refers to 1904, the year when La Rioja Alta merged with Bodegas Ardanza to create the company that still exists to this day. It is composed of 90% Tempranillo from forty-plus-year-old vines in the communes of Brinas, Labastida and Villalba, and 10% Graciano from the Melchoron I and Melchoron II vineyards in Briones and Rodezno, respectively.

After alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in tank, the wine was transferred to four-year-old American oak barrels. It stayed in barrel from February of 2002 until May of 2006 with barrel-to-barrel racking every six months. It was bottled in June of 2006 and has been quietly maturing in the bodega's cellars for the last six and a half years." - Importer
