91 Pts Jay Miller - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The 2008 Pieza el Caldero is composed of 96% Aragon and 4% Garnacha Roja over 70 years of age. It was aged for 12 months in American oak before bottling without filtration. A bit less exuberant than the Pieza el Coll (but also a bit more complex), it offers up greater density and structure along with plenty of ripe, succulent fruit. It is likely to evolve for 1-2 years and will provide much pleasure through 2018."

"Majuelos de Espana, headed by Felipe Alvarez, is a negociant group whose grape growers and winemakers are devoted to recovering old Majuelos (Vineyards) across Spain. Majuelos de Espana's offerings from Ribera del Duero are all barrel samples of 100% Tinta Fine (Tempranillo) from the great 2009 vintage." (06/11)

Description:

Wine:
"Deep purple color. On the nose there are notes of cedar, mineral and black cherry. On the palate it is mouth-filling, rich and spicy. The finish is smooth with no hard edges." - Importer

Vinification/Viticulture:
"The grapes are sourced from 5 dry-farmed bio-dynamically cultivated vineyards of Aragon (the old local clone of Grenache) and a small mixed vineyard of Garnacha Gris and Garnacha Roja. All of the vineyards are between 750 - 800 meters above sea level and are hillside vineyards with a stony, red quartz soil composition and an average grade of 15 - 20%. The Aragon vineyards are over 70 years old and the Garnacha Gris and Roja is over 90 years old. Average production is 2,000 - 3,500 kgs. per hectare and the size of the vineyards is 30 hectares."

"All of the Majuelos vineyards have been cultivated bio-dynamically with special attention to the lunar cycles and following the region's traditional and ancestral viticultural traditions in order to maintain the natural and unique yeasts of each vineyard."

"The red quartz in the soil gives the wine a strong mineral character. Harvest was done by hand from October 15 - 30 2008 into small 15 kg. boxes. Then 20 days of fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 24 - 29 degrees C. Malolactic fermentation then took place in wood vats for 19 days at a temperature of 16 degrees C. The wine then spent 12 months in American oak barrels and at least an additional 9 months in bottle before release. The wine is not filtered or cold stabilized." - Importer
