"Vivid red. A heady, powerfully scented bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, cola, potpourri and woodsmoke. Offers an array of deep red and dark berry flavors braced by tangy acidity, which adds back end lift. The floral and dark fruit qualities linger on a very long, sappy and focused finish. This wine, which shows more sheer power than the Manchester Ridge bottling, has the depth of fruit and structure to age." (05/12) |
92 Pts Pinot Report |
"Medium-deep ruby color; closed, tight aromas at first that open up to black cherry and forest floor notes; deep, tight black cherry flavors with a dusty, mineral note; some earthy notes, a bit of oak and tannin; good structure and balance; long finish. Deep and earthy, this Pinot definitely needs at least an hour to open up. It's definitely built for aging, so be patient. Pair with roasted or grilled meats." ( 07/12) |
91 Pts Wine Enthusiast |
"Dark in color, this is deliciously shy at first, with cherry and raspberry notes peeping out first, followed by an earthy, almost minty roundness. The vineyard is known for its Rhone varieties, and this Pinot has a Syrah-like tinge of peppery spice and bigness in the mouth. With further cellaring or decanting, it will find its Pinot soul." 91 Pts Connoisseurs Guide to Wine |
"Although this noteworthy wine is very young and a touch slow to open, it is beginning to show a bit of intriguing complexity, first in its buoyant aromas of red cherries, dusty spice and dried flowers, and then in its lively, well-extracted flavors. It has that uncommon mix of concentration and grace that sets fine Pinot apart, and, while its slight rise of closing astringency warns against gulping down soon, it is certain to improve for a good many years." Description:
"This is not your typical fruit forward California Pinot Noir. It's reminiscent of a more Burgundian style of wine rarely found in California. Deep in color, the wine exhibits a def balance with plenty of structure and complexity to age and evolve over the next 10 to 15 years. There are harmonious notes of black cherry, plum and earthy mocha that come singing through. The wine is full on the palate with ripe tannins and a long lingering finish." - Tim Olson, Winemaker
Alder Springs Vineyard:
"Alder Springs is located just outside of Laytonville in Mendocino County, an hour north of Ukiah. The vineyard is 7 miles from the Pacific Ocean and sits on an east facing mountain slope between 1700' and 2700'. The vineyard is sustainably farmed in meticulous fashion and yields are very low, ranging from 1.5 to 2 tons per acre. The resulting berries are small with a high skin to juice ratio, which produces concentrated, intense wines."
"Stu Bewley and his team are the most dedicated and passionate farmers we have ever worked with. They are constantly innovating new techniques to fine-tune an already great vineyard. Stu continues to experiment with new clones and rootstocks as well as leading edge varieties including Grenache, Roussanne and Marsanne." - Winery
Producer:
"Olson Ogden Wines is a small, artisan wine company located in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. We specialize in small production, handcrafted wines. Our focus is on Pinot Noir and Rhone varietals, with an emphasis on vineyard designated Syrah's. We seek out passionate growers with special vineyards."
"Our primary goal is to produce balanced, complex and tasty wines that express the terroir and vintage from which they come. Olson Ogden wines are made with food in mind as we feel that wine is an integral part of a good meal. Our winemaking style is rooted in traditional methods but is balanced by trial and error and creative innovation. Our wines are usually bottled unfined and unfiltered and will likely contain a natural sediment during their evolution. This results in an authentic and honest wine that is rich and complex and a pleasure to drink." - Winery
