90 Pts Antonio Galloni - Vinous

"La Carraia's 2009 Sangiovese is a big, deep red laced with dark fruit, French oak, and spices, all of which flow in an extroverted multidimensional expression of Sangiovese. The finish is long, harmonious and juicy. This isn't for the timid, but readers who enjoy a full-throttle style of Sangiovese will find much to admire. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013." (08/10)

Description:

Wine:
"Brilliant ruby-red in color, aromas of ripe blackberries and black fruits develop into notes of strawberries and currants with subtle hints of mocha, tobacco, and sweet spice. On the palate, it is full and rich with soft tannins and lively acidity. La Carraia offers an Umbrian twist on a Tuscan classic: this supple wine is made from 100% Sangiovese, fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barriques for two months to develop extra smoothness and richness. The resulting wine is a versatile, delicious value. Pair this wine with barbecued meat, tomato sauces, pizza, and spicy soppressata." - Importer

Winery:
"La Carraia was founded in 1976 by the Gialletti and Cotarella families. Riccardo Cotarella, one of the most respected authorities on the production and marketing of Italian wines, is the winery's co-owner and winemaker. La Carraia, thanks to its broad and diverse portfolio, is able to satisfy the needs of casual, value-oriented consumers with products like Sangiovese and Orvieto Classico, and the most demanding of collectors with their Fobiano."

"The winery owns a total of 198 acres located in the heart of the Orvieto Classico appellation. Of these, 172 acres are dedicated to the production of Orvieto Classico; the remainder features Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Montepulciano grapes."

"The year 1995 marked the first release of Poggio Calvelli, a joint venture between La Carraia and Winebow. This wine represents a new style of Orvieto Classico, one that is aged in small oak barrels. Tizzonero and Fobiano, the two top-shelf wines produced at La Carraia, are known for consistent quality and overall versatility. These wines are excellent examples of Mr. Cotarella's mastery with red grapes." - Importer

This wine was also scored 87 Points by the Wine Spectator and the Wine Enthusiast.
