Description:
This 2-pack includes 1 bottle of 2009 - Zonte's Footstep Baron Von Nemesis Shiraz, and 1 bottle of 2009 - Sierra Salinas Puerto Salinas.
2009 - Zonte's Footstep Baron Von Nemesis Shiraz:
"Smooth and round, wrapped in a layer of fine tannins. The exotic flavors of cherry, guava, goji berry and tropical spices billow easily on the long finish. Best from 2014 through 2020. 100 cases imported." (05/12) - 92 Pts Wine Spectator
Wine:
"Barossa blood red - i.e. deep crimson with a purple hue. On the nose, super blackberries and pure unadulterated 99% Cocoa chocolate. Lifted blood plum and raspberries and some dark pepper and brambly spice smells. On the palate there are generous black fruits, like mulberries and boysenberries, a full and frank Shiraz start. Classic Barossa; generous, flavoursome and super sweet blackberry pie with dark, dry chocolate mouth feel. Sweet fruit then tightens up with fine fruit and oak tannin. Great flavour and composition. Sweet spice cuts through plus hints of jamminess. On the finish there is youthful austerity as you would expect from such a classic old school Shiraz, but there is also plenty of fineness to the tannin and dark chocolate nuances in the lengthy finish." - Winery
Producer:
"Zonte's Footstep is named after a 19th century Zante currant vineyard, as new plantings follow the original footstep. The currant business dried up, but Zonte's Footstep became our blueprint..."
"In 2003 we pooled old white utes and new-ish tractors to grow the best grapes from the best vineyards. All we want to do is taste our fruit in our wine, so we charged our reigning winemaker, Mr. Ben Riggs, with one goal; to make the best wines we can, true to vineyard and variety, so long as we make a bloody good drink!" - Winery
This was also scored 89 Points by the Australian Wine Companion, and 85 Points in the Wine Advocate.
2009 - Sierra Salinas Puerto Salinas:
"There are 5,000 cases of this remarkable value, another stunning example of the astonishing palate of Eric Solomon and his ability to ferret out exceptional wines at such ridiculously low prices that most consumers will never guess how good they are based on the price alone. Composed of 66% Monastrell, 19% Garnacha and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for one year in both new and 2-year-old French oak, it displays an inky/purple color along with notes of road tar, melted asphalt, blackberry liqueur, camphor, graphite and forest floor. The wine is complex, full-bodied, rich and intense with terrific purity and wonderful overall balance. It is one more example of a wine that completely over-delivers. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years." - (06/12) - 92 Pts Robert Parker - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"Lush and exuberantly ripe, this wine develops in the glass, gaining notes of spice and fresher fruit. It's a tight web of tannins, completely filling the mouth with their energy and power. A wine to cellar for five years or more." (10/12) - 91 Pts Wine & Spirits
Wine:
"This wine's name is derived from the valley where the winery and surrounding vineyard area is called Puerto, which in Spanish means a "natural passage or corridor in between mountains."
"The farming practice is sustainable. The age of vines is 15-30 years. Aging is done for 12 months in new and second-filling French oak barrels with medium toast and from different providers to create more complexity of aromas and flavors." - Importer
Winemaker
Ramon Castano
"The Castano family, continuing their crusade and advocacy for the Monastrell grape, developed this project in the D.O. Alicante in 2003. They acquired and revamped some old vineyards located in the foothills of the Sierra Salinas mountains - between the provinces of Murcia and Alicante - at about 650 meters above sea level The winery is a state of the art, three level gravity flow facility located right in the middle of the vineyards with an underground barrel aging room."
"The estate is 92 hectares of land where almond and olive trees share the land with the vineyards. At present, there are 52 hectares of old bush vines of Monastrell, the indigenous Mediterranean variety, planted around 1970. The rest is devoted to vineyards are planted with other varieties in irrigated trellis, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tintorera and Syrah." - Importer
