"Very pure-tasting, with elegant cherry, plum and smoked meat flavors. Raspberry, olive and savory herb fill the chiseled finish. Shows real pedigree, with fine tannins and plenty of power. Needs time. Best from 2011 through 2016. 500 cases imported. -KM" (02/10) |
90 Pts Mark Squires - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate |
"The 2007 "CEDRO DO NOVAL," Noval's second wine, is 30% Touriga Nacional, 25% Touriga Franca, 10% Tinto Cao, and 35% Syrah (hence, the use of the Duriense rather than Douro appellation). This has resolved well since my last look at it, the Syrah becoming much more fragrant (and a little funky) and the fruit opening. It now has a bright, succulent and juicy finish. It is beautifully structured, too, and built to hold well in the cellar. It is worth extending its drinking window a bit. Note that while it is approachable, it is not yet at peak. If you like its somewhat funky style, it is bargain priced. If you are looking for fruity, soft and sweet, this is not for you. Drink now-2018." (12/10) |
Description:
"Named after the emblematic cedar tree that dominates the terrace of Quinta do Noval, Cedro is an authentic expression of the Douro. Principally made up of classic Portuguese varieties, it also contains a proportion of Syrah, which rounds out the fruit and gives the wine enormous charm and accessibility."
"Cedro do Noval is a blended wine using the noble grape varieties of Douro and Syrah. We planted our first Syrah grapes in 2000. Syrah adapts perfectly to Douro and expresses the characteristics of the soil rather than its specific varietal flavour. All grapes come from the Quinta do Noval vineyard. For vinification we use the "remontage" method for wine in stainless steel vats, with temperatures held at 26 degrees C. All wine is matured in French oak casks for approximately 18 months." - Winery
Terroir:
"Quinta do Noval benefits from a privileged position at the very heart (Pinhao) of the heart (Cima Corgo) of the Douro Valley. The vineyard which is entirely classified letter A is planted with the noble grape varieties of the Douro: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cao, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Francisca, Sousao. The parcels of the vineyard possess a rich geographical diversity: . altitude : from 100 to 500 m . exposition : all the points of the compass . the soil : schist mixed in varying degrees with a little clay. This confers particular nuances on the wines according to the parcel they come from. The blending of these nuances results in the magic of the wines of Quinta do Noval." - Winery
