2008 Mater Domini Salice Salentino Riserva
"This is the kind of wine that makes me love my job every day. You never know when someone is going to bring you something eye opening like this, and I immediately fell in love. The aromatics are so deep and powerful, one sniff was all it took to say WOW. Aromas of crushed rock and herbs combined beautifully with wild strawberry, blueberry and acacia flower aromas. The palate is bold, rich and nicely textured, with great balance. Loaded with complexity and not just fruit character, but great earth tones as well. Slightly tannic on the finish, but air really helps those melt in to the wine. If you were paying $80 to $100 on a wine list, it's still an incredible steal, that's how much I think of this wine." - 95+ Pts Ian Dorin - Wine Library
Salice Salentino is a commune in southern Apulia that is a DOC as well. Always comprised of a high percentage of Negroamaro (minimum 85%), it is sometimes blended with small amounts of Malvasia Nera, as this wine is here.
Winery:
"Tenute Materdomini is a young winery located in the Salentino area, close to the town of Lecce. All the vineyards are in the best spot of the region, very close to the seaside at an altitude between 200-300 meters, above the sea level. Perfect characteristics to grow Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. This estate focuses on producing wines traditionally made with the help of modern technologies." - Importer
"Tenute Mater Domini was founded in 2003 through the realization of a business venture by Pierandrea Semeraro, aimed at using the food resources already present in the territory of Salento, particularly those of wine and oil."
"The concept of quality for the company is primarily focused upon modernizing methods of agricultural production, paying particular attention to agricultural innovation, as well as respecting the traditions of the Salento area. The production of our products follows this philosophy "creating innovation, whilst being aware of our roots"."
"Quality is not a subjective parameter, but is rather a philosophy aimed at achieving perfection. It is linked to the goal of not leaving anything to chance, and also to respecting the environment in producing a unique product ."
"The Salento peninsula is characterized by the running of two seas, representing an excellent field of application and experimentation of the concept of terroir."
"Terroir derives from many factors, ranging from the soil and climate, the particular grape varieties, the special features of the land, and above all to the wine tradition in this area." - Winery
2009 Ampeleia Ampeleia Toscana:
"The 2009 Ampeleia is the most striking wine I have ever tasted from Ampeleia. A blast of rich, dark fruit hits the palate, followed by exotic espresso, sage and sweet spices. There is a wild, unrestrained quality to the 2009 that separates it from most wines being made on the Tuscan coast today. Layers of fruit build to the rich, voluminous finish. This is a fabulous effort. Ampeleia is 60% Cabernet Franc and 15% Sangiovese, plus an assortment of other red grapes grown on the property. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021."
"I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Ampeleia this year. Every time I went back to the wines, I found a new shade of dimension. A gradual conversion to biodynamic farming and an increased use of cement vats are stripping these wines to the bare essentials, and what comes through more often than not these days is pure class." (06/12) - 94 Pts Antonio Galloni - The Wine Advocate
"Deep, opaque ruby-red. Aromas of red berries, herbs, cocoa powder and brown spices. Silky on entry, then sweet and superconcentrated in the middle, spreading out to saturate the palate with dark berry, herb and mocha flavors. The ripe tannins are already in perfect harmony with the wine's fruit. A wine of great energy and clarity, and a very impressive vintage for Ampeleia." (09/12) - 94 Pts Ian Dagata - International Wine Cellar
"The vineyard is a unique examination of terroir, with three distinct levels, each with its own vegetation and microclimate. Ampeleia is undoubtedly a story about terroir, but it is also a story about friendship and collaboration. Elisabetta, her two friends Giovanni and Thomas, acquired this vineyard together, progressively transforming an idea into present day reality. Their main goal was to make the most of this rocky mountain terroir of Roccatederigh. Ampeleia wines strive to achieve balance and elegance through blends that have more resonance together than if they were apart." - Winery
