"Pineapple, passion fruit, ruby grapefruit and loads of mineral aromas and flavors mark this expressive auslese. There's fine structure to balance the sweetness and intensity of fruit. Has a long finish. Drink now through 2035. 250 cases made." 93 Points - Wine Spectator
"Harvested parallel with the several vineyard passes for the corresponding Grosses Gewachs, Wittmannâs 2006 Westhofener Moorstein Riesling Auslese drinks like a lime and watermelon sorbet: lusciously juicy, palpably dense and creamy; invigorating and refreshing despite its superficial sweetness. A wonderful sense of delicacy and pure white peach and citrus character as well as chalky and saline mineral suggestions, inform the long finish. (This has only 8% alcohol.) It should be worth following for 12-15 years." 91 Points - David Schildknecht - The Wine Advocate
"Pale gold. Rich aromas of pear nectar, marzipan and vanilla. Succulent on the palate, with a persistent acidity providing freshness to the quince and yellow plum flavors. Offers nice weight and texture, and good spicy depth to lift the finish." 90 Points - Joel Payne - International Wine Cellar
VINEYARD:
"One of Germany's most famous appellations, the first documented mention of the Morstein vineyard dates back as far as 1282. The famed Morstein vineyard is a unique terroir of Germany's Rheinhessen sitting between the villages of Gundersheim and Westhofen. Soils are shallow and consist mainly of clay marl and large limestone rocks. Weingut Wittmann owns approximately 10 acres in the heart of the vineyard." -Importer
ESTATE:
"The quality of Philipp Wittmannâs wines has helped raise the profile of the Rheinhessen, the region where his family estate began in 1663. Wittmann has used organic viticulture for over fifteen years and biodynamic farming since 2003. He feels, âOnly old vines can give the true mineral character and low yields necessary to make great wines.â
"Wittmannâs vineyards include Grosses Gewächs Morstein, Kirchspiel and Aulerde. Favoring a drier, trocken style, Wittmann prefers wines âwith more minerality than fruit. Riesling is a grape that should show elegance.â There is intensive vineyard care during the year, low yields and rigorous hand selection of grapes. The slow fermentations sometimes continue well into the following year. Like well-made Burgundies, Wittmann wines show great terroir transparency. " -Importer
