"Delicious, with a rich, concentrated mass of crushed blackberry, pepper, black cherry and wild berry fruit, supported by firm, ripe tannins, but what's most impressive is the aftertaste, which keeps the vivid flavors tightly focused with great length. Drink now through 2010. 237 cases made." -90 points Wine Spectator |
Description:
WINERY:
"Alcina Cellars, a California label from wine lover Greg Piatigorski (Greg P. to his friends), specializing in single-vineyard Pinot Noirs and Syrahs from purchased grapes. The debut vintage is 2002. [Piatigorski had help from] winemakers Bob Foley of Pride and Greg La Follette of Tandem, who Piatigorski calls his mentors and inspiration (not to mention his connections to great grape sources)."
"Greg Piatigorski makes his wine at Greg & Greg Inc., a custom-crush facility outside of Sebastopol, Calif., run by Tandem proprietors Greg La Follette and Greg Bjornstad. [Piatigorski chooses Pinot and Syrah because]: 'I rarely consume wine by itself,' Piatigorski says. 'When we sit down for a meal, these two grapes compliment a great range of food in my opinion.' Reflecting further, he adds, 'To be honest, as Brian Loring [of Loring Wine] put it to me three years ago when I started, 'Make the wine you like to drink, because if you can't sell it, you'll be drinking well.' That's the reason each winemaker has a signature style. I don't think it's consumer driven, I think it's taste-preference driven.'" -From a 2005 Wine Spectator article "New Wines, New Faces: Alcina Cellars"
