Description:
2003 LA GERLA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO RISERVA ANGELI:
"The single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Gli Angeli is made in a concentrated style that sits on the razor's edge of over ripeness. A big, full- bodied Brunello, it offers tons of jammy fruit and sweet toasted oak along with tobacco, chocolate, leather, spice and underbrush nuances that develop in the glass. In this vintage the wine has a somewhat ponderous, heavy quality that causes it to fall short of the superb 2001. Although the 2003 Vigna Gli Angeli offers outstanding balance, I slightly preferred the regular bottling for its greater vibrancy and freshness. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015." -90 points- Antonio Galloni- Wine Advocate
"Wonderfully fruity on the nose, with strawberry and raspberry. Slightly jammy. Full-bodied, soft and round, with juicy tannins and a long, fruity, creamy vanilla aftertaste. Best after 2010. 465 cases made." -90 points Wine Spectator
WINE:
"Loose grape pressing; temperature controlled during (30°C), macro oxygenation, fermentation and 15 days maceration; 2 every year rackings, slow continuous flow bottling with inverter system in sterilized conditions. Ages for 4 years, 3 of which are in Slavonian wood casks of 50-100 Hl, then 8 months in bottle."
"The wine is an intense ruby color verging on garnet. On the nose, it is dry, warm, harmonious, velvety, steady in body and heart. On the palate, this is ethereal, melting into scents of sweet violet and iris, recalling the berries growing in the woods. Pair with red meats and game. Keep the bottle upright at room temperature for at least 24 hours. Uncork it two hours before and serve decanted in a carafe." -Winery
2004 CHATEAU BARDE HAUT:
"A gorgeous nose of ripe raspberry, with hints of vanilla and blackberry. Intense yet subtle. Full-bodied, with lots of fruit, yet refined and layered with silky tannins. Long and caressing. Gets better and better. I like it more than the 2003 or the 2000. Best after 2012. 6,065 cases made." -91 points Wine Spectator
WINE:
"The 16 hectares of vineyards have clay and calcareous soils, with 35 year old vines. The grapes are manually harvested. The wine is fermented in concrete vats, wooden vats, and stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for a period of 18 months in 100% new french oak barrels." -Winery
WINERY:
"This property was bought by Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard in September 2000, CHATEAU BARDE-HAUT is a 17 hectare estate located at the extreme east of the village of Saint-Emilion. The vineyard forms an natural amphitheatre and is particularly well exposed to the south with views over the Dordogne valley. The soil is very typical of Saint Emilion being mainly composed of clay which is found on a layer of chalk." -Winery
This scored 89 points by both Robert Parker and Stephen Tanzer of the International Wine Cellar.
