"As always, the 2017 Chateauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes has a touch more dark fruits, more concentration, and more structure, which makes it less approachable but more age-worthy. Blackcurrants, ground pepper, bouquet garni, crushed rocks, and garrigue notes all emerge from this structured, focused, yet ripe and beautifully textured Chateauneuf Du Pape that's going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age." |
93 Pts Joe Czerwinski - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate |
"The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes starts off with scents of tapenade, then adds ripe cherries and cola notes. Dark and concentrated, it's full-bodied and open-knit, perhaps a bit coarser than the elegant 2016, with a touch of chocolate on the long finish. The Grenache in this cuvee was planted in 1905, making this a relative value among old-vine offerings." |
Description:
While some of Clos Saint Jean's portfolio comes with a price well north of $100 a bottle, they do produce some remarkably well-priced wines as well.
There is no cutting corners going on here either as their Old Vine CDP cuvee is always one of the top values every year, and we expect no less in the 2014 vintage as well.
Most of Clos St Jean's plots are located on the legendary plateau of La Crau, where the soil is dominated by iron rich clay. The vines that provide fruit for this specific cuvee are between 50-100 years of age! These vines have had plenty of time to mature and their roots have dug deep into the iconic terroir of CDP.
The resultant wine is super expressive and complex!
