100 Pts James Suckling - Jamessuckling.com

James Sucklings Wine of the Decade This is an emotional wine that touches your soul the minute you put your nose in the glass and then taste it. Its energy draws you in. Agile and ethereal. It redefines wine and the wines of Chile. Full and fresh with intense tannins, yet they remain bright and not heavy. A perfect wine by all accounts. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 23% carmenere, 5% cabernet franc, 5% petit verdot and 2% merlot. Drinkable now, but this will give you incredible pleasure in another five years. It was our Wine of the Decade in 2020. Try after 2027.

97 Pts Decanter

A Bordeaux blend, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (65%) and Carmenère (25%). Power and concentration, elegance and balance. Exuberant aromas of cassis, damson plums and peppers. The palate is complex with cigar box, dark fruit and herbal notes framed by dense and polished tannins, finely integrated oak and finishing on a remarkable lifted length. A wine that will benefit from decanting or laying down.

97 Pts J. D'Angelo - International Wine Report

The 2017 Almaviva is a show-stopping effort from this storied Chilean Estate. This is a compelling blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carménère with the remainder Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. As this begins to unwind in the glass it releases capivatiing nuances of crème de cassis and blackberry pie which are joined by red bell pepper, green olive tapenade and Turkish coffee that all come together to provice the stunning aromaticas. On the palate this full-bodied red is possesses a gorgoeus silky, seamless quality that is backed by a multi-layered texture that leaves behind flavors of ripe dark fruits, mocha, creosote and black olive that all leave a lasting impression. Elegant, yet rich and sophisticated, the 2017 Almaviva is gorgeous now and should also have a sensational future ahead of it.

Description:

For fans of opulent, powerful Cabernet based wines, the 2017 Almaviva is a dream-buy

Almaviva is the joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Vina Concha y Toro, much like the joint venture Opus One between Rothschild and Robert Mondavi.

Therefore, it’s not surprising that Almaviva has earned the nickname “the Opus One of Chile.” This wine combines the absolute best of Chile’s Puente Alto terroir with the absolute best of the Bordeaux winemaking tradition, including help from Chateau Mouton Rothschild’s director, Philippe Dhalluin… the best of both (Old and New) worlds!

2017 was one of the warmest and driest in Chile, which reduced yields overall but the grapes that did survive showed remarkable concentration and purity!

"Made from a blend of classic Bordeaux varieties, in which Cabernet Sauvignon predominates, Almaviva is the result of a felicitous encounter between two cultures.

Chile offers its soil, its climate and its vineyards, while France contributes its winemaking savoir-faire and traditions.

The result is an exceptionally elegant and complex wine. Its launch was a major milestone in the development of Chilean wines, both in Chile itself and in the international market." - Winery
