"Block UU has some of Bien Nacido’s oldest vines—own-rooted riesling planted in 1973, grafted over to chardonnay in the 1980s. Those wide-spaced rows accommodated an interplanting of more chardonnay in the early 1990s, and Foxen makes use of both plantings. The block’s shale-laced benchland soil produces notably concentrated fruit. Ergo this powerful yet balanced chardonnay, displaying a mouthwatering tension between its pink grapefruit tang and its warm, sun-charged breadth.
