94 Pts James Suckling - Jamessuckling.com

"Complex aromas of dried meat, pancetta and dark fruits follow through to a full body, with fine tannins and lots of subtle fruit. Nutty and minerally at the finish. I like the style and different character in this young wine. Better in 2014."

93 Pts Antonio Galloni - Vinous

"A deep, plush wine, the 2009 Syrah Il Bosco needs time to develop the breadth of its aromas and flavors, but it is nevertheless striking today. Plums, pipe tobacco, cedar and black olives flesh out in this gorgeous, broad-shouldered Syrah. An explosive yet nuanced finish rounds things out in style. I can't wait to check in on the 2009 in another few years." Reviewed August 2013

93+ Pts Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The 2009 Cortona Syrah Il Bosco offers all the plush softness you want from the grape (Syrah) and the place (Tuscany). This is a true beauty with lingering notes of cured meat, dark berry and balsam herb that grow in intensity and momentum as the wine warms in the glass. The mouthfeel is richly textured and dense with an excellent level of extraction and long persistency to match. Il Bosco should hold well for the next decade. Drink: 2015 - 2025" Reviewed September 2015.

Description:

"Il Bosco (the forest) is a selection of 100% Syrah from three vineyards planted between 1988 and 1995 at a density of 7000 vines per hectare. The vineyards are situated at 280 to 300 meters above sea level and are hand-harvested. The wine is aged for 24 months, 50% in used barriques and 50% in large used oak casks.

Il Bosco is the winery's theoretical premier cru with considerably more density and complexity than the entry-level Borgo Syrah. The wine shows clear varietal definition with dark fruit, floral aromas, and peppery spice while also maintaining its Tuscan (specifically Cortona) identity with vivid acidity and muscular tannins.

Tenimenti d'Alessandro is the pioneering winery for Rhône-style wines in Cortona. The winery began experimenting with 10 acres of Syrah in the late 1980s and discovered that Cortona was ideally suited to Rhône varietals. They followed with an additional 80 acres and are now recognized as the benchmark producer of Syrah and Viognier in Italy.

Cortona sits to the east of Montepulciano in southeastern Tuscany. The mesoclimate of the area is almost identical to that of the Northern Rhône: hot and sunny with cool temperatures at night. The vineyards are planted to Northern Rhône clones of Viognier and Syrah and are farmed organically." - Importer
