Montecucco Rosso is a relatively new DOC for Tuscany, though the region has an extensive history of winemaking...as most of Italy does. The Montecucco zone is in southwestern Tuscany, on hillsides just across the way from the vineyards of Brunello. As in the rest of Tuscany, Sangiovese is king in Montecucco and makes up the dominant portion of the Rosso blend.

The Colle Massari estate was founded in 1998 by a brother and sister team and in 2014 was named winery of the year by Italy's influential food and wine magazine Gambero Rosso. Their 2012 Rosso Riserva is a Sangiovese-based blend (80%), with a dash of the local variety Ciliegiolo and a pinch of Cabernet Sauvignon. By producing such phenomenal expressions of Sangiovese, Colle Massari has done much to elevate the reputation of Montecucco. Don't wait too long.
