"Densely structured and full of character, offering bold cherry and licorice aromas that lead to layered flavors of savory plum, grilled herb and Asian spice. The finish is framed by ripe but big tannins. Best from 2016 through 2022. 9,300 cases made." Reviewed June 2014 |

"This old vine Zinfandel made from the finest, 50+ year old parcels on the Home Ranch, Cortina Ranch, and San Lorenzo Ranch vineyards in Alexander and Dry Creek valleys offers considerable drinking pleasure despite the vintage. It is dark and earthy with notes of ripe black cherry, black raspberry, cocoa, and spice. It's elegant and rich, finishing with firm tannic grip. " |
Description:
Long ago, Seghesio Family Vineyards recognized a difference in the wine we made from the gnarled, thick-trunked Zinfandel in our older vineyards. Its spicy complexity and tone of wild raspberry underbrush begged to be bottled on its own. Itâs been 27 years since we produced our first Old Vine Zinfandel, and though âold vineâ is often loosely interpreted, our benchmark is at least 50 years. In fact, many of the vines we farm date back to the 1920s, â30s and â40s. In addition to the age of the vines, the location of the vineyards makes our Old Vine Zinfandel stand out. Our estate-farmed vineyards in Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley were selectedâdecades agoâbecause their geography, climate and soils were thought to be ideal for growing Zinfandel. Time has proven this to be true. Cool nightly temperatures and deep-rooted vines allow fruit to mature slowly over the growing season, yielding grapes with uncommon flavor, color and a beautiful balancing acidity. Our hands in the vineyardsâ pulling leaves, thinning clusters and dropping fruitâensure a balanced crop.
With cooler temperatures and limited yields, 2011 was the kind of growing season Winemaker Ted Seghesio likes to see. Crafting the Old Vine Zinfandel from the best vineyard blocks, Ted found the wine to have concentration, elegance and complexity: âThe wine is dry yet leaves the impression of sweetness because of the fruit.â With profound fruit and excellent acidity, the 2011 may be one of our best Old Vine Zinfandels yet.
Winemaker's Tasting Note
"Deeply perfumed aromas of dark berries and old vine Zinfandelâs intrinsic briary spiciness. Layered bright fruit flavors reminiscent of a rich berry pie with a toasted crust. Old vine Zinfandelâs complex spice undertones. Low yields in the vineyard preserved the vibrant natural acidity and balanced tannins. Long, persistent finish."
