"Golden colour, big, bold aromas but not of the buttery, toasty kind - thereâs a flint-mineral edge and touch of struck match coupled with just a lick of aroma lifting VA. Theme of candlewax/beeswax, into the body of the wine too - holding in the leaner, bright fruit characters in a cuddly embrace. Feels careless in shape and size but itâs an attractive 'light-and-space' that I see, and the underbelly of bright, natural acidity gives quartz-like minerality to the flavour profile. It's generous without being too obvious, and rich not flabby, an exciting proposition. Very interesting, good drinking wine. Individual." Reviewed April 2012, Drink:2012-2018+ |

"Medium yellow colour. Very appealing mealy, cashew nutty, and faintly malty aromas; creaminess of malolactic is evident. Quite full flavour, soft and savoury, mellow and rich, very dry finishing and has decent length. Good acidity and firm finish with a touch of grip, but in balance. A trace of alcohol warmth. Drink by 2016. "May 2012 |
Description:
'A lot of ferrous ironstone in the clay soils that the chardonnay grows on - very red clay and sandstone - with pockets of buckshot and high silica content', says Ngeringa's Erinn Klein. Settled overnight, oxidative handled, whole bunch pressed, spontaneous ferment, full malo, average barrel age is 5 to 6 years old with 15% new oak, or so, dash of sulphur just before bottling. "We consistently see a dry, mineral character in the wine, it's certainly not tropical, we see more savoury here, seeing full bodied but not being into the 80s chardonnay way".
About Ngeringa

The top of the vineyard has views over Lake Alexandrina and the mouth of the Murray, which make themselves known on summer evenings with a strong cooling breeze despite daytime temperatures. The vines are planted at a density of 6800 vines/ha.
