92 Pts Luis Gutierrez - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The 2010 Tierga is pure old-vine Garnacha from a vineyard outside the appellation's limits, so it is not a Navarra wine. Instead, it is from the slate soils around the village of Tierga at the foot of the Moncayo mountain, in the province of Zaragoza. The vineyards are located at 700 meters altitude, with some more than 60 years old. The wine aged for seven months in 500-liter French oak barrels. It is heady and ripe, intoxicating, with notes of cherries in liqueur, hints of raisins and prunes, well-integrated oak and some initial creaminess. It has a soft, silky texture, rich in glycerin, and not tannic. The finish is slightly warm. Drink cooler rather than warmer, at about 15C. A tad less ripe would be better. Drink now-2018."

Description:

Tasting Notes
"Dark violets, opaque, clean and bright. The nose is youthful and given time will mature with fruit, freshness and elegance. The oak is subtle and allows the fruity aromas to fully express themselves. On the palate it is full, all encompassing, like a first kiss: soft, delicate but firm and long, very long, lingering. The finish is mineral-trace of the crumbled slate of the tosquilla during the frozen winter nights at Tierga." - Winery

Luis Gutierrez, Robert Parkers Wine Advocate
"La Calandria was created in 2008 by three partners who work 11 hectares of old-vine Garnacha in the villages of Cintruenigo and Corella, the southern, warmer part of Navarra. They only produce wines from Garnacha grapes and they focus on the vineyards, producing the wines in a friend's winery. It took me some time to taste their top cuvee Tierga, which I sampled some time ago and liked, as it is produced from grapes grown outside the Navarra appellation. In fact it is from Aragon, near a small village called Tierga, where the old vines are being grubbed up, the cooperative is closing its doors, and they seem to have a race against time to save some of these old vineyards. There are, rich, heady Garnacha wines at this address."

About the Producer: La Calandria
"The producers of La Calandria, Luis and Javier, met at the tender age of thirteen in school and became fast friends. Their paths parted ways for university - Luis studying Fine Arts and Javier studying Enology - and then joined again through a passion for wine years later. Together they embarked on a search for the purist form of Garnacha and the mantra that life is too short to drink bad wine. La Calandria, was born. Their method still involves searching, thus their namesake - after the gregarious Calandra lark who nests on the ground allowing for mobility. In the same way, La Calandria keeps their operation mobile and agile so they are able to move from vineyard to vineyard. Today, you'll find them "nesting" in the province of Navarra in northern Spain. They farm with an organic approach leaving the vines and earth to flourish as it was intended which includes tumbleweeds and the necessity for hand pruning. The grapes for La Calandria wines come from three distinct vineyards: Cintruenigo, Murchante and Tierga." - Importer
