93+ Pts Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate |
The 2011 Block 2 Chardonnay offers a wonderful array of savory and citrus notes redolent of apricots, pink grapefruit and orange blossoms with suggestions of cashews, bakerâs yeast, butterscotch and allspice. Medium-bodied and still very tightly knit in the mouth, it has layers of stone fruit, nut and spice flavors supported by a seamless line of acid, and a finish with great length. Drink it now to 2019+. |
Description:
A parcel within The Elms Vineyard, Block 2 was planted with a Mendoza clone Chardonnay in 1992 on Lochar soil â schist with a shallow top soil composed of fine sandy loam, clay and gravel. The grapes were whole bunch pressed and flowed immediately to barrel without settling. The wine was fermented naturally sur lie in French oak (12% new) with complete malolactic and was periodically stirred. After aging for 17 months in barrel the wine was racked to tank and bottled without fining or filtration.
A restrained bouquet of citrus peel with hints of tropical fruit and intense minerality, the wine shows remarkable density of flavor. Layered flavors of flint, stone and barely ripe white stone fruit are textured and complex.
Winery Information:
Felton Road is located in Bannockburn, Central Otago in New Zealand â the world's most southerly wine growing region. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling are produced from the estate's 80 acres of vineyards, divided between three sites â The Elms Vineyard, Cornish Point Vineyard and Calvert Vineyard. All estate fruit is organic, handpicked and viticulture is Demeter certified biodynamic. Vinification is equally meticulous â the wines flow directly via gravity to barrel in Felton Road's underground cellars, wild yeasts are used for fermentation, malolactic occurs naturally and fining and filtration are avoided if at all possible. Purity of expression is winemaker Blair Walter's goal and his experience in Oregon and Burgundy has stood him in good stead. His wines offer richness, density, complexity and texture and are exceptionally clear expressions of varietal and place.
