"A juicy, almost gutsy style, with a mix of raspberry coulis, plum paste and fig sauce notes, pushed from behind by lively briar and anise accents. The rich finish shows an ample wood component, presenting a singed juniper edge that adds range and texture. Drink now through 2022. 1,000 cases made. -JM" (11/14) |

"Bottled in February of this year, the 2011 Saint Joseph Vignes des Hospices is one sexy, seamless and silky Syrah that readers shouldnât miss. Perfumed and complex, with a sweet bouquet of cassis, licorice, spice-box and pepper, it has a medium to full-bodied, forward style thatâs perfect for drinking over the coming decade or more. |
Description:
"This wine originates from two steeply terraced vineyards which Guigal now owns or controls through the purchase of the De Vallouit and Grippat domaines. "Vignes de L'Hospice" is a tiny, steep vineyard perched high above the town of Tournon in perhaps the best part of the St. Joseph appellation. It is owned by the local Hospice, and the vines are leased to Guigal on a long-term basis. To this cuvee is added part of the production of the vineyard "Les Anges" (the Angels), which previously had belonged to the de Vallouit domaine." - Importer
Estate:
"The firm of E. Guigal, located in Ampuis, was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal. Since 1961 his son Marcel has led the estate, and his unparalleled work ethic and dedication to quality have brought attention to Cote-Rotie and other appellations throughout the Rhone that were in danger of being lost, and lifted the Guigal wines to the pinnacle of the wine world. Today, Marcelâs son Philippe serves as Director and Oenologist, continuing the tradition of leadership in the Rhone Valley and uncompromising excellence." - Importer
Vineyard:
"This vineyard is located above the Hospices, rising nearly to the top of the extraordinarily steep slope above the town. Together with the Lieu Dit Le St. Joseph, these are arguably the finest vineyards in the AC." - Importer
