"Hirsch's 2012 Riesling Gaisberg combines memorable richness and mouthwatering savor, as though salted, browned butter, saffron and oyster liquor had been stirred into a mixture of tart apple sauce and porridge of toasted grains. These elements have their aromatic counterparts here along with scents of green tea and sea breeze encompassing iodine, alkali and kelp, so that you can spend a delightfully long time just breathing in this beauty before proceeding to luxuriate in its satiny texture and be revived by the lift, refreshment, and saliva-inducement of its lingering finish. Look for stellar performance through at least 2020. Incidentally, this was yeasted in the course of its fermentation to get it to complete dryness, whereas the corresponding Heiligenstein got to that point entirely spontaneously. "I'm in favor of relatively warm fermentations," notes Hirsch, 'which I think helps the native yeasts build mass and work efficiently.' |
91 Pts Joel Payne - Vinous Media |
"Lively aromas of white peach, honeysuckle and nutmeg. The pure guava fruit and velvety texture are nicely complemented by refreshing acidity. Succulent and long on the aftertaste, this charmer has the makings of a thoroughbred." |
Description:
The 2012 Hirsch Gaisberg Riesling Reserve carries the outstanding âErste Langeâ, or First Growth classification, named for wines from the top vineyard sites of Austria. David Schildknecht of Robert Parkerâs Wine Advocate went ballistic over this releasee from 40 year old Riesling vines from one of Hirschâs top sites. He scored it 94 points for its âmemorable richnessâ and entering its prime drinking window now and for at least the next 5+ years.
We jumped on every single case that was left in the market. The wine has just arrived, but youâll need to act fast-thereâs not much of this left. Cheers!
"Medium green-yellow hue. Enticing aromas of ripe yellow tropical fruit, sweet stone fruit, delicate orange blossom honey, smoky mineral characters. Sappy, silky-sweet texture, finely structured acidity; elegant and persistent, hints of apricot on the finish, great development potential.
This single vineyard Riesling is sourced from 40-year-old vines that thrive on the terraced slopes of the famous Zöbinger Gaisberg vineyard. The eroded primary rock soils offer ideal preconditions for Riesling. Due to their expressive fruit and mineral character, wines from this site tend to charm quite early, yet excel with remarkable ageing potential.
This wine is a wonderful companion for many dishes with white meat as well as stew, numerous vegetarian dishes and sea fish, but also an exciting match to aged hard cheeses." -Winery
