92 Pts Antonio Galloni - Vinous
"Macarico's flagship 2008 Aglianico del Vulture Macarico emerges from the glass with serious depth and power. An exotic wine, the 2008 is laced with blackberries, cherries, plums, licorice and tar. This is an especially powerful Aglianico that puts a little more emphasis on fruit rather than varietal character, but it is very beautiful all the same. " (02/13)
Talk about savings!! Take 55% off the suggested list price. It's not often you can try a wine that should retail for close to $40 ... for well under $20!
Many of you will recognize this wine in a heartbeat. The 2006 and 2007 vintages were huge hits and now, we are on to the 2008 which once again, delivers incredible value for the money!
"Macarico makes powerful, personality-laden wines from their vineyards in Barile. Aglianico from the Vulture is quite distinct. Macarico is a great place to start learning about the wines. The estate farms without pesticides or herbicides." - Antonio Galloni talking about the wines from this tremendous estate.
We have had two other vintages from this producer over the last year that have been huge hits. The 2008 vintage continues a string of back to back to back incredible vintages from this incredible producer. As we have noted in the past, the winemaker for this wine, Rino Botte, has lived and breathed this region for quite some time, and is committed to making world class wines from the volcanic slopes of Mt. Vulture. With Botte's past experience in running a Michelin-starred restaurant, it's no surprise that this wine screams to be paired with food.
Like the other two vintages, this will make for a tremendous house wine. As we remarked on the previous vintage of this wine, from time to time, we know many of you are on the look out for what we call, house wines. Wines that you can buy by the case without breaking the bank and open from time to time. Wines you can open up on a Tuesday or Thursday night. Wines that you can pop when friends and family come over. Wines you can easily grab for a quick visit to your local BYOB.
This is an example of such a wine!
Galloni went on to rave about this wine, issuing a 92 Point score. He noted "Macaricoâs flagship 2008 Aglianico del Vulture Macarico emerges from the glass with serious depth and power. An exotic wine, the 2008 is laced with blackberries, cherries, plums, licorice and tar. This is an especially powerful Aglianico that puts a little more emphasis on fruit rather than varietal character, but it is very beautiful all the same. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023."
Take advantage while it lasts!
"Aglianico del Vulture is called vecchio after aging in barrique for three years and riserva after at least five. It is considered among the best vines produced in Italy and also carries the name Barolo of the South due to the similarities in its production process and taste."
"According to history, this variety was brought to Italy by the Greek and it was known as Hellenica. The Romans called it Hellenic and used it to improve the quality of the Falerno, a favorite wine of the poets of this time. During the 15th century under the Aragonians it was finally referred to as Aglianico."
"The Macarico cellar was dug right into the volcanic rock. It is 40 meters long (120 feet) and resembles the cave- cellars owned by locals hundreds of years ago. The cellar maintains a modest temperature fluctuation that ranges from 13 degrees to 16 degrees C."
"The relative good number of fermenters allows for good flexibility in harvesting and wine making. In other words at Macarico Estate is able to implement 5-6 vinifications at each harvest." - Importer
