"Filipa is the daughter of Luis Pato, one of the heroes of Bairrada, so her winemaking DNA is substantial. This graceful, alive wine is a blend of Arinto and Bical, delivering delicious white fruit that manages to balance vibrancy and elegance with an attractive nervosity as well. A wine with a fine personality."

Description:

The 2012 Filipa Pato FP Branco comes from Bairrada, arguably the most important wine region of Portugal. It was made by cutting edge winemaker Filipa Pato. Passion for the traditional indigenous grape varietals of Bairrada and Dao led Filipa Pato to start her own project in 2001.This project consists of working a total of 30 acres of vineyards scattered in various parts of the Bairrada and Dao.

Her 2012 Filipa Pato FP Branco is a superb wine with a fine personality for casual sipping or pairing with food. It's easy to understand why Decanter gave it 94 points, remarking that the wine delivers "delicious white fruit that manages to balance vibrancy and elegance with an attractive nervosity as well"!

If you like high quality white wines from Burgundy`s Macon-Villages sub-region, this subtle, long-tasting blend of Bical and Arinto from similarly chalky clay soils is for you. Aged in part in fine grained Allier oak, this wine's juicy white peach and lemony fruit washes delightfully and delicately over the palate. It's a beautifully balanced wine with silky and seductive fruit.

So, if you are the last holdout who has yet to discover the incredible quality and value coming from Portugal, here's a great opportunity to expand your horizons. At $15.99, this purchase will surely represent money well spent!

More about this wine:
"For more than 5 generations, the Pato family makes wines without compromises. We are proud of our heritage, we love our indigenous grape varieties and we respect the old vineyards, working them with perfectionist manual labour. This persistence of the family's vision of many generations allows us to understand better the beautiful puzzle of the Bairrada region.

After my childhood in the family’s vineyards, I went to study science at the Coimbra university. To improve my knowledge of viticulture, I travelled the world to work in 3 continents (Oceania, South America and Europe). This helped me a lot to understand better different cultures and I was able to meet many inspiring winemakers.

On the way back home I started to dream of having an own project in my beloved Bairrada. After travelling for 3 years I had a better view on my region. I saw it with the eyes from a stranger and it made me understand much better the great potential of our area.

Finally in 2001 my family gave me the chance to start my own winery. Here I could start to vinify small cuvees from different parcels and terroirs, other than from my family's property. Improving my knowledge of the different terroirs and microclimates, I was capable to add more and more vineyards to my portfolio every time I had the possibility. The alma of my vineyards lays around the village of Ois do Bairro. In this village surrounded by vineyards, I am starting to rebuild an old 19th century winery. It will have a cellar for our casks, amphora's and bottles.

In 2007 I met my husband William Wouters, a top sommelier from Belgium. He introduced me to many different wines from regions I only knew from the books. He helped me opening up my horizons again to more wine and gastronomy. We started together our fetish wine "Nossa", it comes from the best parcels I found since 2001. It really expresses all the intensity of the Bairrada region!

In 2010, I was shocked by seeing the devastation of the Baga grape in the area. So I founded together with other growers in Bairrada, including my father, the group "Baga friends" in order to keep and maintain the heritage of the old vineyards of Baga." - Winery
