More Ratings:

97 Pts James Suckling - Jamessuckling.com

"Complex aromas of blackberry, stones, cracked black pepper and tar. Full body with soft, round tannins and a juicy, fruity finish. Soulful and refined from this estate. This is a magical wine from Southern Italy." (02/14)

92 Pts Wine Spectator

"There's drive to this well-meshed, sanguine red, offering flavors of herbs, dried currant, iron and black olive that are deftly layered with sinewy tannins and balancing acidity. Drink now through 2021. 5,000 cases made. -AN" (04/14)

91 Pts Ian Dagata - Vinous Media

"Good full ruby. Ripe red cherry, dark plum, licorice, coffee and spicy oak on the nose. Sweet, plush and very ripe, with plum, truffle and milk chocolate flavors framed by adequate acidity. Complex wine with youthfully chewy, building tannins and excellent breadth. In a riper style than some past vintages." (04/14)

Description:

Tasting Notes:
"Deep purple in color, smoky aromas of earth and black fruits complement undertones of tobacco and graphite. On the palate, the wine is expressive and rich with ripe tannins and integrated alcohol." - Importer

Wine:
"The family-owned Galardi estate produces just one wine...but it does so perfectly. Located on volcanic soils in northwestern Campania, the vineyards are nestled among chestnut groves and benefit from cool Mediterranean Sea breezes. Terra di Lavoro actually means "land of work" in Italian, a name that has historical roots, but also accurately reflects the difficulty involved in growing grapes in these volcanic soils. In this challenging environment, Aglianico and its supporting grape Piedirosso produce wines of incredible depth, complexity, and elegance." - Importer

Winery:
"Galardi is run by an enthusiastic group of dedicated cousins, Maria Luisa Murena, Arturo and Dora Celentano, and Francesco Catello. The estate is firmly committed to making wine of the highest quality and has reaffirmed this commitment by hiring the distinguished oenologist, Riccardo Cotarella, who shares their philosophy. Together they strive to maximize the intrinsic characteristics of native grapes Aglianico and Piedirosso through attentive and careful vineyard management." - Importer
