Description:

WINE:
"This new Chianti Classico came on the scene in 2010. The total area of estate-owned specialised vineyard amounts to some 90 hectares, of which about 65 are registered to Chianti Classico DOCG, while the remaining 25 hectares go to Tuscany IGT wine. The process of replanting the outdated vineyards began in 1996 and continues uninterrupted today. Starting in 2010, the crop from the youngest vineyards registered to the DOCG grew to a substantial quantity; therefore, in order to avoid changing the character of Castello di Ama Riserva, we decided to begin making a new Chianti Classico. Ama is made almost entirely from new Sangiovese clones planted at 5,300 vines per hectare in the five estate vineyards (Bellavista, La Casuccia, San Lorenzo, Bertinga, and Montebuoni), utilising our lengthy expertise and the most advanced high-quality viticulture practices." - Producer

"Ama takes its name from the small borgo, or hamlet, nestled in the hills at almost 500 metres' elevation. Five centuries past, it was the centre of local farming activities, as well as wine production carried out by a group of families of the area. 'Da Radda the road led to Amma, three miles away, on a hill, where the Pianigiani, Ricucci, and Montigiani live, the most prominent families in Chianti. They are well-off country gentry that spend all their income on farming and vineyards, and do everything themselves. Surrounding the castello of Amma are the most beautiful hills and valleys in all of Chianti, beautifully tended, with fertile grain fields, olive groves, and magnificent vineyards,' wrote Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Habsburg-Lorraine in his 18th-century Report on the government of Tuscany."

"His visit is commemorated by a plaque of that era affixed to one of the buildings in the borgo, which are now owned by the winery. Castello di Ama was established in the 1960s by a group of families from various places who fell under the spell of this spot and undertook the challenge of restoring the splendours of Ama's past and of producing a Chianti Classico that would stand among the world’s most prestigious wines." - Producer
