"A powerful mix of floral and ripe white fruit flavors gives this a rich, languid edge, revealing toasty elements and plenty of spice. Finishes with a bold assortment of lemon curd and pasty notes. Drink now through 2019. 467 cases made. -KM" (06/13)

Description:

Producer:
"Vintage 1968, winemaker with heart and soul, collector of awards for his Gruner Veltliner and Riesling wines and owner of the some of the best vineyard sites of the mentioned varities. Until recently, keeper of a dog and a house, living in Dross in the Lower Austrian wine-growing area Kremstal. That's the short version of Walter Buchegger."

"A slightly longer form of his success story would be as follows: In the year 1893, the family Buchegger started with viticulture in Gedersdorf in the Lower Austrian wine-growing area Kremstal. In 1994, Walter Buchegger assumed complete responsibility of the winery from his dad Leopold in fourth generation. With the vintage of 2006, the new, modern-style winery in Dross, which is a small village 10 kilometres north of Krems, was put into operation. There, Walter takes now care of the business together with his girl-friend Silke Mayr. Also his parents still give him a hand in all the belongings around wine-making."

"Nearly all the vineyards are still located in Gedersdorf. 11 hectares - which is about 25 acres - are planted with mainly two varieties, Gruner Veltliner and Riesling. A small portion is reserved for Chardonnay, Zweigelt and Merlot. The top sites are the vineyards named Moosburgerin, Pfarrweingarten, Tiefenthal, Gebling and Holzgasse, which combine more than 70 percent of the total acreage. In the well-cultivated vineyards, that mainly grow on Loess, Walter Buchegger focuses on integrated treatment and yield restriction. The soil is rich in humus because of green manuring and little soil compaction. At the time, as most of the vineyards of the Buchegger family were planted, clonal breeding were still a long way off. Exactly these sites, Walter wants to maintain for much longer, so that their individual gene material show to advantage in his wines in future as well. After the manual harvest, the grapes are handled as gentle as possible to bring the quality from the vineyards into the bottles. Depending on their characteristics, the wines ferment and mature in stainless steel tanks or wooden barrels. The terroir finds expression in the wines through slow and sensitive vinification. It is very important for Walter that all his wines - from the light to the stronger ones - are elegant, balanced and give a pure and easy drink sensation. Because of the high ripeness of his wines, they are a pleasure to drink for many years." - Importer
