93 Pts Robert Parker - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Autard's quasi-modern-styled offering is the dense plum/purple-colored 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee La Cote Ronde, a blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah from relatively old vines (60 plus years) that sees some new oak barrels. However, the 2009 shows only subtle evidence of vanillin and toast. It is a seductive, full-bodied, opulent effort displaying notes of caramelized red and black fruits, herbs, licorice and a hint of ink. This full-bodied, rich 2009 is ideal for drinking over the next 12+ years." (10/11)

93 Pts Wine Spectator

"Beautifully rendered, with sleek, polished layers of blackberry, cassis and boysenberry fruit inlaid with toasty spice and sweet anise notes. The long, ganache-coated finish glides along despite its heft, with a great roasted mesquite note that lingers on and on. Best from 2013 through 2023. 400 cases imported. -JM" (10/11)

92 Pts Josh Raynolds - Vinous Media

"Full ruby. Pungent, oak-spiced aromas of dark berry liqueur, cola, licorice and incense. Fleshy and ripe on entry, then brighter and more animated in the mid-palate, showing impressive depth and energy to its cassis and blueberry flavors. This seductive, fleshy, distinctly modern wine finishes very long and smooth, with lingering vanilla and spice notes." (02/12)

Description:

"Glowing purple. Some coconut on the nose. Round, glossy texture and some refreshment on the palate before the tannins take hold. Pretty impressive. Glossy all over. Drink from 2015 to 2024. (JR)" - (10/10) 17+ out of 20 Points, Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages.

Wine:
"One of Autard's top wines, the Chateauneuf du Pape La Cote Ronde, comes from a parcel of vines that are between 75 and 90 year old, planted in stony, fossil-rich soil on a dome-shape hill (hence the name "Cote Ronde"), in the Le Mourre de Gaud lieu-dit, on the plain between the village of Chateauneuf and Courthezon. The blend is 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah."

"The Cote Ronde parcel is vinified separately and is aged in 100% new oak barrels. It is an intensely concentrated, lush-textured wine with vivid dark fruit, spice, chocolate and oak flavors. Autard only makes this cuvee in top years. Parker has consistently given the Autard's Cote Ronde 90+ scores since its inception." - Importer

Producer:
"Jean-Paul Autard carries on the tradition established by Paul Autard when he founded the domaine in the village of Courthezon in the 1970's."

"Autard has 26 hectares of vines, of which 12 are in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and 14 in Cotes-du-Rhone (located at the border of the Chateauneuf appellation in Courthezon.) The aging cellar is a massive, vaulted cave cut into sandstone rock, housing the domaine's barriques. The Autards feel privileged to have inherited a domaine in which the plantations of different cepages are perfectly adapted to the soil types - ranging from galets roulets, pebble and clay, and sandy-clay - in their various parcels. They aim to get the most out of each variety by vinifying separately and then blending judiciously. The grapes are destalked and fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with only the native yeasts present on the grape's skins. After the malolactic fermentation, the wines are transferred to barriques for aging, about one third of which are new for the regular cuvee of Chateauneuf and 100% new for the Cuvee La Cote Ronde and Juline. Since 2004, Jean-Paul has been working in his new state-of-the-art winery, which allows him greatly enhanced control over all phases of winemaking, and a concomitant increase in quality. His unique style, fusing elegance, balance and generously expressive Chateauneuf-du-Pape flavor, has won his wines an international following."

"Farming practices: Jean Paul Autard's vineyard practice aims to achieve a perfect balance between and soil and the vine. He is guided by the practice known as culture raisonnee. Autard does not need to green harvest because his vines average over 50 years of age (they are 40 to 96 year old). The vines' age, together with the limited use of only organic fertilizer, naturally ensures low yields and concentrated, balanced fruit. No pesticides or chemical anti-rot products or fertilizers are used. The health of the vineyard is ensured by meticulous work by hand, such as the removal in May and June of unessential shoots and leaves that would block the proper aeration of the vines. Jean-Paul is able to eliminate the possibility of problems such as rot and mildew by not allowing humidity to remain on the grapes and leaves." - Importer
