91 Pts Robert Parker - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate |
"The dense ruby/garnet/purple-tinged 2009 Gigondas Cuvee Alexandre offers sweet aromas of spice box, black cherries, black currants, new saddle leather and damp forest. Full-bodied and impressively endowed with low acidity and silky tannin, it should drink well for a decade. These cuvees, made by the president of the Syndicat de Gigondas, Franck Alexandre, are from an old estate (created in 1838) with only 18 acres under vine. The Cuvee Alexandre, which comes from their oldest parcel of vines that are over 100 years of age, is composed of 80% Grenache and the rest a field blend believed to be principally Mourvedre and Syrah. Both of these offerings are exceptional efforts for their respective vintages." (10/11) |
Description:
"A ruby colour with garnet-red tints. Complex aromas of ripe fruits, spices and musk. It is velvety and round in the mouth and has a long finish." - Winery
Vinification/Winemaking:
"Gigondas is in the heart of the southern Cotes du Rhone area at the foot of the "Dentelles de Montmirail" mountains. Cuvee Alexandre represents 1 hectare of selected grapes from very old vineyards on Domaine les Tessonnieres."
"Picking is carried out by hand and the grapes are sorted in the vineyard and at the winery. The vintage is not destemmed. Tank maceration at 20 to 30 degrees C for 20 days and blending of the different varieties before tank fermentation. The wine is made solely with the free-run or first juice."
"The wine is racked several times after malolactic fermentation and matured in large oak tanks for a year. It is bottle-aged for a year before sale." - Winery
Vineyard:
"Our vineyard enjoys a Mediterranean climate dominated by the sun and mistral (NorthWind). Located at the foot of Montmirail, massive steep, through which breezes temper the rising and falling temperature peaks."
"Exposure west of our area gives perfect ventilation, avoid excessive heat of the summer and gives our wines finesse and acidity that make wines of excellent care. Sandy clay soils by their high permeability mitigate erosion storm water and allow quick soak plots. This helps to store overnight, solar activity to prolong vegetative vines."
"Our vineyard is composed of 13 varieties, but it's our Grenache (sometime old) present on the field who express them selves in all their fullness on this soil. Indeed limiting sun shine in the morning, the Dentelles significantly increase the maturity of Grenache, who needs to express slow at best. Grenache has provided our wines: the body, tannins, and any expression of our terroir." - Winery
