Description:

This 2-pack includes 1 bottle of 2011 - Jermann Pinot Grigio, and 1 bottle of 2009 - Moris Farms Avvoltore.

2011 - Jermann Pinot Grigio
Wine:
"Pinot Grigio from Pinot Grigio grapes, part-fermented as a white wine. It has an intense straw-yellow colour with a light nuance of antique rose. Its aroma is intense, full and fruity, with excellent persistence. Its taste is dry, velvety, and particularly well-orchestrated for its full body. It is paired with fish soups, chargrilled seafood and various dishes based on field mushrooms and porcini mushrooms. This wine is wonderful with squid ink lasagnette pasta and crayfish sauce." - Winery

Vineyard:
"Predominantly marlstone and sandstone belonging to the Flysch formation from the Eocene era that gave rise to a rocky substrate that later formed the characteristic "ponca" of the Collio area." - Winery

2009 - Moris Farms Avvoltore:
"Opaque inky-purple. Black cherry, plum, cocoa and aromatic herbs on the knockout nose. Savory, suave and dense, offering a terrific combination of juiciness and depth to its minty black fruit and tobacco flavors. Bright acids and firm, sweet tannins give this lush, seamless blend a solid underlying structure. The smooth, long finish features palate-saturating flavor. Very well done: even though this is in the typically creamy, riper style of the warm Tuscan Coast, Avvoltore almost always manages enough lift and gracefulness to avoid coming off as yet another high-pH, creamy monster. Aged 12 months in new and once-used small French oak barrels." (09/12) - 94 Pts Ian Dagata - International Wine Cellar

"The 2009 Avvoltore is one of the most refined, elegant wines I have ever tasted from Morisfarms. Sweet, silky tannins frame a core of super-expressive black fruit. The wine flows across the palate gracefully yet there is plenty of underlying structure. This is a fabulous, sleek Avvoltore that is sure to find many fans. Stylistically the 2009 is quite ripe and radiant, but it doesn't have the heft or weight of a truly opulent year. The wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for at least a handful of years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024." (08/11) - 93+ Pts Antonio Galloni - The Wine Advocate

"Aromas of chili powder and dried fruits follow through to a full body, with round and chewy tannins and a long finish. Needs another two or three years to come together." (09/12) - 92 Pts James Suckling - JamesSuckling.com

Wine:
"Made from Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah from the Poggio all'Avvoltore vineyard in the Massa Marittima. The soil is clay, rich in fossils, slightly acidic. The harvest took place during the second and fourth weeks of September, dependant on the various varietals. Fermentation took place in termperature-controlled cement tanks with the cap pumped over twice a day during a period of maceration lasting 25 days. Malolactic Fermentation took place in 225 liter barrels (80% new). The wine was racked once during this period. Additional barrel aging for 12 months followed by six months in the bottle before release." - Importer

Morisfarms:
"Morisfarms is the Tuscan estate of the Parentini family, which comprises an impressive 420 hectares under vine, with the vast majority of vineyards lying within the Morellino di Scanscano subzone of the rugged Maremma region in southwestern Tuscany. Morellino, which is often known as "Baby Brunello" is one of the great, undiscovered wine-producing regions of Tuscany. The wines of Morellino stylistically represent a hypothetical blend between the generally medium-bodied, red fruity, spicy and tangy wines of Chianti and the more plummy and serious wines of Brunello. Perversely, Morellino di Scansano’s relatively low profile on the international wine market has allowed it to avoid the pitfalls of over-extraction and excessive use of new oak barrels that has come to plague many of the formerly superb estates in Brunello in the last decade, and it is no longer a rare occurrence when a Morellino bottling from a top producer such as Morisfarms outperforms a bevy of dried out Brunellos at a comparative tasting."

"There are two distinct bottlings of Morellino from Morisfarms, a "normale" made in a more fruit-forward style that emphasizes both the perfumed fruit tones of top Sangiovese and the lovely soil complexity of the region. It is made from a blend of ninety percent Sangiovese, mixed in with five percent each of Cabernet Sauvignon and, to add a note of exotica, Syrah. The Riserva Morellino is also made from ninety percent Sangiovese, culled from the oldest and best-situated vines of the estate, and blended with a mix of Cabernet and other grape varieties, depending on the profile of the vintage. It is only produced in outstanding years. Morisfarms also produces their own version of a Super Tuscan, their IGT "Avvoltorre," which is made up of seventy-five percent Sangiovese, twenty percent Cabernet Sauvignon and five percent Syrah." - Importer
