"Luis Cerdeira grows alvarinho on the granite soils of Melgaco, and works with neighboring farmers and their small plots of vines. He makes a concentrated, ageworthy selection from his own estate to bottle as Primeiras Vinhas, as well as this village wine, which is often the standout in the region. This is the Cerdeira family's 30th alvarinho vintage and Luis believes that the cool nights of August, the slow maturation of the grapes and their relatively small clusters ripened to make this vintage one of his best. It's hard to disagree, the wine beautifully formed, with a scent of crushed herbs and pale white pear that's mouthwatering. It's youthfully fresh, immediately seductive, substantial in its incipient depths of flavor. A joy to drink now, this is a wine that will age gracefully over the next decade." (08/13) |

"The 2012 Alvarinho was tank aged and bottled in January, 2013. It comes in at 12.5% alcohol. It is just what most will want in fine Alvarinho. The winery calls 2012 a "perfect harvest." The end result seems quite brilliant. Crisp, focused and pure, with just a bit of a lemon-y note early on, it is a beautifully wrought, very precise and very concentrated Alvarinho. It is intense, yet transparent and expressive. It lingers wonderfully on the finish, showing more and more grip as it goes along. There is a touch of herbaceousness as well, which gives it some individuality and a lot of personality, plus an invigorating character. Hours later, it was notably better. The next day it may have been better still. It is a very fine effort from one of Portugal's (and the world's) top Alvarinho producers. Soalheiro makes a number of specialty Alvarinhos, too. They will have to go some to beat this, though, and this one is likely to be far better priced. It should age quite well and improve in the cellar, but it will certainly be impressive this summer as well. One final note: you may think that this is expensive for Vinho Verde. Treat this like quality wine. It is not stereotypical Vinho Verde. There is no fizz. It is dry. It will age well if well stored. On its own terms, likely to be on many shelves in the low $20s, it is a bargain. Drink now-2022." (04/13) |
Description:
"A classic. Fresh aroma, intense flavour and an unusual evolution in bottle."
"The Alvarinho grapes used in the Soalheiro came from several small vineyards planted in granite soil between 100 and 200 meters and located in a very particular microclimate in Melgaco. Melgaco region, the northern point of Portugal, is protected by a range of mountains that create the perfect conditions of rainfall, temperature and number of hours of sunshine needed to the better ripeness of the Alvarinho grapes. The brand name - Soalheiro - arises from the excellent sun exposure of the vineyards bearing the same name - a sunny place."
"This very special microclimate led Joao Antonio Cerdeira to plant the first Alvarinho vine in 1974 and to create, in 1982, the first Alvarinho brand in Melgaco - "Soalheiro"."
"A large area of the vines used in the Classic Soalheiro comes from Quinta de Soalheiro were the grapes are organically produced and were the biodiversity of the animals and plants is promoted. It is exclusively from this vines that comes the grapes to produce the Soalheiro Primeiras Vinhas "first vines" and the Soalheiro Reserva." - Winery
