93 Pts Robert Parker - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The sweetest wine of this trio is the non-vintage Maury Hors d'Age, which is made from a solera system that is between 7 and 10 years of age. Lots of fudge, espresso, blackberry and cassis notes are present in this wine which coats the mouth, has lots of unctuosity, light to moderate sweetness and a long finish. Readers should think of this distinctive wine as a Grenache on steroids."

"Maury is another underrated appellation known for their wines made from Grenache planted in pure schist and gravelly soils." (02/12)

Description:

Wine:
"Beautiful brick red color, with reddish orange tints. Powerful aromas, wood, cocoa, prunes, grilled almonds. Complexe taste, potent and sweet, walnut shells, prunes, crystallised orange and vanilla. Well coated tannins. Typically harmonius, full bodied wine with good tannins and a long finish." - Winery

Vineyard/Winemaking:
"The soil is black schist slopes and gently sloping clay/chalk terraces. The grapes are exclusively 30-50 years old grenaches noirs from the vineyard. Grapes are selected and hand picked in the vineyard, sorted on a sorting table, de-stemmed, and fermented with skins using the long maceration method. They are then pressed in manual mode. The particularity of the Hors d'Age lies in the fact that it is not oxidized but made from a slowly Maury Vendange "maturation". The unfiltered and non-clarified wine is kept in oak barrels of 350 liters in air conditioned cellars."

"Lying back from the Roussillon plain, the Maury terroir benefits from a geology (Schist and Clay-calcareous)which allows it to create robust wines of exceptional taste. The Maury wines from the Domain come from vines situated in the heart of the commune of Maury. The Domain also owns vines in Latour de France Appelation, a part if which were planted in 1901. They produce a red wine of rare complexity. Paul, the grandfather, was born in 1909. A pioneer of Maury and a tireless defender of the legislation for A.O.C. Robert, the grandson and present owner of the Domain, is carrying on the tradition with a growing program close to nature, respecting the soil, biological diversity and the ecosystem." - Winery
