Description:

This pack includes 1 bottle of 2007 - Quinta Do Noval Silval Port, and 1 bottle of 1997 - Gould Campbell Vintage Port.

2007 Quinta Do Noval Silval Port
"Probably my all time favorite of the Silval bottlings. Bold flavors of brambly blueberry and blackberry pie and a bit grapy at this stage. Good acidity and easy to drink now with round, drying tannins. A delicious and persistent juicy finish prevailed. Drink between 2025 and 2035." (05/10) - 93+ Pts Roy Hersh - For the Love of Port

"Bright ruby. High-pitched, very ripe aromas of blackberry, spicecake, licorice pastille and rose petal, with a whiff of brandy. Impressively tactile and concentrated, with a three-dimensional texture to the rich flavors of blackberry, bitter chocolate, flowers and spices. Distinctly high-pitched, even a bit youthfully aggressive, but wonderfully pure wine. Finishes broad and long, with lovely sweetness and impressive grip. A superb showing, and a very good value in the context of vintage port." (01/10) - 92 Pts Stephen Tanzer - International Wine Cellar

"The Silval bottling from Quinta do Noval, which is effectively their second label vintage port, is very lovely in 2007, as the wine displays dramatic depth of fruit and great purity and solid structural integrity. The superb bouquet soars from the glass in a complex blend of black cherries, black raspberries, tar, licorice, lovely soil tones, delicate smokiness and cedar. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and rock solid with sappy fruit at the core, with ripe, beautifully-integrated tannins, tangy acids, great focus and a very long, pure and palate-staining finish. This is made in a more forward style that will not insist on long aging before it begins to drink brilliantly, but it will have no difficulties aging for at least the next thirty-five years. A lovely example of the vintage. 2014-2050." (09/12)- 91 Pts John Gilman - View from the Cellar

"This is a wonderfully focused and intense young Vintage Port, with notes of flowers, crushed berries and cherry. Full-bodied and very sweet, with ripe berry and jam flavors. Long and powerful. Best after 2016. 1,000 cases made. -JS" (05/10) - 90 Pts Wine Spectator

"Such vibrant young fruit! Chock-full of plum jam, bramble stew, beautiful mouthfeel and supple tannins with a chocolate and peppery note on the finish. Made to mature quicker than their other vintages, and this is definitely drinkable now, though would really benefit from more time. Drink from 2012 to 2022.(RH)" - 17 out of 20 Points, Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages

"Silval is a particularly open and accessible style of Vintage Port, with the accent on exuberance of fruit. Made for lovers of Vintage Port who do not want to wait too long, it can be enjoyed when young and very fruity. This is a serious Vintage Port which will also repay years of cellar ageing.

Grapes for the 2007 are taken essentially from the Quinta do Noval vineyard, but also from A-rated vineyards at the heart of the Douro Valley." - Winery

1997 Gould Campbell Vintage Port:
"Rich aromas of plum and fresh stem, with a leafy undertone. Intense strawberry. Full, lightly sweet, chewy and solid. This has grip. Juicy. Lots going on. Youthful and structured. Beautiful. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective. Best after 2008. 1,100 cases imported. -JS" (2008) - 91 Pts Wine Spectator

Wine:
"The grapes for Gould Campbell Ports are drawn from vineyards in the Alto Douro area, where the yields are very low (about one pipe - 550 litres - per 1,000 vines) but the wines have immense complexity and depth. The winery is situated at Pinhao, where a proportion of the wines are made in modern temperature controlled fermentation tanks. However, a significant proportion of Gould Campbell Ports are still made in small quintas in the hills around Pinhao, using the ancient method of treading the grapes by foot in stone tanks called lagares." - Winery

Winery:
"Gould Campbell was founded in 1797 when Garret Gould, prompted by the political strife wracking his native Ireland, sailed to the hospitable shores of Portugal where he established the firm of Messrs. Gould Brothers & Co., operating from both Lisbon and Oporto."

"The firm survived the trials of the Peninsula War which followed a few years later, when the Anglo-Portuguese army of the Duke of Wellington expelled the French invaders, and soon became very successful bringing into partnership the prestigious Merchants and Bankers Messrs. James Campbell & Co. Gould Campbell came to establish a reputation for the excellent quality of their Ports and their Vintage Ports in particular."

"In 1970 the firm was acquired by the Symington family who had themselves been Port producers since 1882. It is therefore one of the very few Port shippers which remains a private family business, thus retaining its individuality and distinctiveness." - Winery

This was also rated 88 points in the International Wine Cellar.
