"From (in order of importance) Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan grown on schist, the Chateau Saint Roch 2009 Cotes du Roussillon Chimeres delivers scents and palate impingement akin to crushed stone, with iodine and fruit pit further accenting its ripe dark cherry, purple plum, and black raspberry fruit. This displays a saturation of tine tannins and a stain-inducing intensity of sheer fruit, along with a surprising sense of lift and vivacity, even though those virtues are combined with a hint of heat. It should perform well for at least 3-4 years." (06/11)

"A blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Carignan, from 50+ year-old vines and schist soils, that was aged 8-12 months in 500-liter barrels, the 2009 Chateau Saint-Roch Cotes du Roussillon Villages Chimeres has pungent, intense bouquet of black cherries, distilled herbs, wet earth, old leather, and exotic flowers. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a silky, polished feel, no hard edges, and beautiful freshness and energy, this superb value needs air to show at its best, and will continue to impress for another 4-5 years, possibly longer." "Lovely dark red color with flavors of ripe dark cherry, purple plum, and black raspberry fruit on the nose. Displays a saturation of tine tannins and intensity of sheer fruit with hints of fresh spices." -Importer

"Recently purchased by Jean Marc Lafage, Chateau Saint Roch is located in the Maury Area of the Agly Valley, which is 15 miles from Perpignan and the Mediterranean Sea. The castle of Queribus, built by the Cathars, at the top of the steep Corbieres Mountain watches over the vineyards from the north. Each plot is now surrounded by black berry bushes, fig trees, pomegranate trees, cherry trees, carob trees, oaks, as well as fields of thyme, lavender and fennel. The soil of the hills is made up of schist clay with a limestone base and their altitudes vary between 360 to 1110 feet. The wind here the 'Tramontane', circulates in this corridor between Fenouilledes and Corbieres. The southern Catalan sun takes advantage of the refractive qualities of the schist from this ancient icy plateau to give St Roch its unique light. Chimeres is a French word meaning 'utopic dream'. The name was chosen for this wine, because it displays utopic characteristics and is perfectly balanced and flavorful." -Importer
