2008 Ruffino Modus
"A balanced red with plum and hints of milk chocolate. Cocoa. Medium-to-full body, with silky tannins and a delicious finish. Balanced and delicious." 92 Pts James Suckling - JamesSuckling.com
"Modus delivers velvety aromas of black cherry, chocolate, leather, exotic spice and pipe tobacco. This super Tuscan blend is comprised of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and it does a very nice job of showing the soft side of those grape varieties, especially on the long finish." 91 Pts Wine Enthusiast
"A sleek, pristine red, with vibrant acidity behind its cherry, strawberry and mineral aromas and flavors. The oak shows a light touch, and this resonates on the lively finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2013 through 2022. 12,500 cases made." 90 Pts Wine Spectator
"On the label of Modus the rose of the winds is intertwined with the elements which form the soul of a great wine: the vine, the sun, the soil, the life, the time, the fruit, the manner, the wine. In this special wine the Sangiovese from the Chianti hills encounters two international grape varieties which have found a new home in Tuscany, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon."
"Modus was first produced in 1997 from grapes selected in the vineyards of the Tuscan Estates of Ruffino. It was not, though, a new wine in the real sense of the term. Ruffino had, in fact, been experimenting with the coltivation of non-traditional grape varieties on Tuscan soil since the eighties. Some of the most encouraging results had been obtained with Cabernet and Merlot."
"In Modus the Sangiovese presents its solid structure and typical cherry and red berry aromas; the Merlot contributes with its characteristic smoothness, enriched by delicate notes of mint and small black berry fruits; the Cabernet Sauvignon seals the union between these 3 royal varieties with its austerity, with its sweet, herbaceous perfumes and its elegance."Â
"Complex, yet simple at the same time, modern in style, yet with a distinct Tuscan character, Modus is a child of the union of Ruffino's century-long winemaking experience and the company's desire to renew itself by experimenting with new varietal expressions and new viticultural technologies. This has always been a Ruffino trademark." -Winery
2006 Musella Amarone Riserva
"A lovely wine, displaying overall style and elegance, as well as a core of intriguing spice flavors that are wrapped in layers of cherry compote, damson plum preserves, dark chocolate shavings and spicy tobacco notes. There's fine integration here, with an overall vibrancy. The long, spicy finish shows just a hint of tannins. Drink now through 2026. 200 cases imported. -AN" (08/11) 94 Pts Wine Spectator
"This fantastic Riserva Amarone opens with savory aromas of dark spice and black pepper followed by red fruit, cherry, dried apple, plum and raisin. There's a sweet note on the close followed by firm, polished tannins. -M.L." (12/11) 91 Pts Wine Enthusiast
"The healthiest, ripest bunches of picked grapes undergo a unique drying process (Appassimento) that take place, on cases in a well naturally ventilated loft. The grapes lose at least the 35% of their original weight thereby concentrating sugar, aromatic compounds and noble tannins. In January grapes are gently crushed and the fermentation starts at low temperature(13-17 C). then, transfer to oak barrels of 700,1500 and 3500 litres of various origins and composition and age, mostly from Allier forest. The wine remains one year in bottles before release." -Winery
"Hugh Johnson writes about Recioto di Musella in the 1969 edition of 'The World Atlas of Wine'. With a great history behind us, we are continuing this wonderful work in a rural court of the sixteenth century, surrounded by green meadows crossed by the river Fibbio, which originally hosted the stables of the aristocratic Villa."
"Accomplished in the greatest respect of tradition, the building has been transformed into the precious setting for our botti and the cellar, equipped with all the latest technologies. The large hayloft above the ancient stables has been reserved for the drying of the grapes used to produce our Amarone. This process takes place thanks to a carefully calculated natural ventilation, which guarantees the healthy conservation of the grapes." -Winery
