90 Pts Ian Dagata - Vinous Media

"Medium-deep red. Spicy floral and red berry aromas on the fresh nose. Creamy-sweet and smooth, with savory red berry and earth flavors that show attractive inner-mouth aromatic character. With its long, smooth finish, this is an extremely impressive example of Chianti Colli Senesi, a DOC that is usually an underperformer." (07/12)

Description:

WINE:
"Aging done in old, Slavonian oak casks with an extended period of must maceration. Fastidious management of the vineyards, summer pruning, bunch thinning and extreme, selective harvesting allows for a limited but singularly, high quality production. The Colli Senesi is located south of the Chianti Classico in the Siena hills and is the largest of the Chianti sub-zones, including also the Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano areas." -Importer

WINERY:
"Azienda Agricola 'I Poderi di San Gallo' in Montepulciano, is composed of the Bertille and Casella estates and covers around 20 hectares. The soil composition is mainly tufa-clay with a variety of exposures. Eight hectares of vineyards are currently in production with a further seven hectares coming on line with the 2008 vintage. The estate includes a centuries-old olive grove and a beautiful lake, an oasis for migrating herons. For most of the producers in Montepulciano, Vino Nobile and Rosso di Montepulciano are moving in an 'international' direction with the inclusion of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in the grape blend along with the use of French oak barriques."

"I Poderi di San Gallo follows traditional, time honored, wine making techniques with aging done in old, Slavonian oak casks with an extended period of must maceration. The grape varieties cultivated, traditional to the Montepulciano area, are the Prugnolo Gentile (the local name for Sangiovese), Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Canaiolo and Mammolo for their Rosso di Montepulciano. Fastidious management of the vineyards, summer pruning, bunch thinning and extreme, selective harvesting allows for a limited but singularly, high quality production. Upon passing the bar exam and becoming an international lawyer, the Roberti family's daughter, Olimpia, changed direction and became director, viticulturist and wine maker at I Poderi di San Gallo. The winery's label name 'Le Bertille' is the name of one of the local communes from the Montepulciano area, as well as, the namesake of one of the San Gallo estates." -Importer
