93 Pts Wine Spectator

"Very ripe and powerful, with ripe plum, fresh porcini and cinnamon. Full-bodied and powerful, with loads of fruit and powerful tannins. This has structure for the vintage. It's tight and closed right now. Best after 2010. 1,050 cases made. -JS" (2009)

92 Pts Stephen Tanzer - Vinous Media

"Dark, bright red. Rather tight but pure nose hints at raspberry, flowers and minerals. Pliant, perfumed and sweet in the mouth, conveying an impression of flesh without weight. Quite dry and classic but also rich and broad, boasting excellent definition and finishing with terrific structure, verve and grip. This maintained its vinosity for a good three days in the recorked bottle. Lovely traditional Brunello." (08/09)

92 Pts Antonio Galloni - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The estate's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a big wine bursting with dark fruit. It remains a powerful, dense Brunello dominated by primary aromas and flavors, although occasionally notes of licorice, leather and spices emerge, hinting at the wine's complexity. The oak is beautifully balanced, and all the wine needs is another year or two in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020."

"This small estate located in the Tavernelle zone of Montalcino continues to craft better and better wines with each passing vintage." (06/09)

91 Pts Wine Enthusiast

"Fossacolle delivers both delicate complexity to the nose and long-lasting power to the palate. Aromas include blackberry, peppercorn, licorice and cedar wood. The mouth is awarded an extremely rich texture with velvety layers and cushiony soft tannins. -M.L." (06/09)

"Leather, liquorice, earth, black cherry. Firm dense and very tight and nervy. Highly promising. Drink 2011 to 2021. (RH)" 17 out of 20 points, Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages (02/09)

"Our Brunello di Montalcino is produced only with Sangiovese Grosso grapes from our own vineyards. The bunches are rigorously selected for quality and hand-picked into small boxes. Following a gentle pressing, the must undergoes a pre-fermentation at low temperatures in steel and wood fermenters. The alcoholic fermentation takes place rigorously under temperature controlled conditions for 22 days at 30-32°C."

"An extended maceration and frequent pump-overs, punch-downs and delestages optimize the extraction from the skins. The malolactic fermentation is completed in concrete vats before the wine’s ageing phase, which includes 12 months in 25 hl oak casks and another 12 months in 225 litre French oak barriques. Subsequently the wine matures for another year in glass-lined cement vats. A mere static settling, but no filtration, complete the wine making process before its final bottling and its 8 months later release into the market."

"Of intense ruby color, our Brunello shows on the palate alluring aromas of very ripe red berries and delicate spices, while the full body is gratifying and persistent, with outstanding minerality. Remarkable tannins, soft and creamy in texture, confer concentration and aging potential to this wine, a real 'Cru' of great distinctiveness." -Winery

"Marchetti Sergio owner of the estate of Fossacolle, belongs to an old patriarchal family of the 18th century. This family's descendants have ever been living and farming on the land of a large and noble lineage. At the beginning of the '80s, the owner of this land, sold the territories where the Marchettis worked and decided to donate them the 'Podere Fossacolle'. In 1984, the first Sangiovese-vineyards were planted, marking the start of the viniculture activity. "

"Some years later, the vineyards were registered as Brunello di Montalcino, allowing the winery to develop the enological aspects with investiments related to the realization of the cellar for the vinification and aging in wood barrels. On January 1st, 2002, the winery issued their first Brunello di Montalcino, vintage 1997." -Winery
