93 Pts Jay Miller - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The 2005 Grattalops is a blend of Garnacha and Carinena from vines averaging 65 years of age. It was aged for 12 months in French oak. Dark ruby-colored, it displays a bouquet of crushed rock, scorched earth, lavender, espresso, black cherry, and plum. Full-bodied, on the palate it has excellent volume, layers of fruit, superb grip, and a plush personality. This lengthy effort will continue to unwind for another 2-3 year and offer prime drinking from 2012 to 2020. "

93 Pts Wine & Spirits

"The children of the founders of the New Priorat farm this deep red on ten acres of garnacha and carignan, the vines 60 years old. Its ripe flavors are full of notes of figs and plums, well supported by the tense structure; its tannins monolithic as they balance the massive weight of sweet fruit. To drink now with lamb or to put away for four or five years."

Description:

WINE:
"Located in Gratallops, a warm area in Priorat but with a fresh humid wind called Garbinada, this very old, very steep, North facing vineyard is cultivated by a mule . When purchased, it had been completely abandoned for more than 30 years, and careful renovation was required. The grapes are fermented in open 500 Liter barrels, where they macerate during more then 30 days. After the press the wine is aged in barrels, some new, for 18 months. Following bottling, the wine is cellar-aged for an additional 2 years to give the wine time to express its terroir." -Importer

WINERY:
"Partida Bellvisos is the creation of Rene Barbier Jr, whose father first set foot on this remote and unfriendly region exactly twenty years ago. Sixty year old vines from four hectares of steep terraced vineyards are the exclusive source for the single wine that is affectionately called 'Ariadna' after Rene's daughter with his wife, the renowned winemaker Sara Perez. The north facing vineyards lie between 300-350 meters above sea level and are planted solely with Carinena and Garnacha Peluda, a relative of the Grenache found in the southern Rhone Valley. Rene stresses organic vineyard treatments are possible due to the fact that the land is pristine and has never seen any diseases. Open barrel fermentation and only native yeasts; the wine is then aged for up to 20 months in the same 300 liter barriques of slightly toasted bois de Bourgogne." -Importer
