90 Pts Josh Raynolds - Vinous Media

"Bright red. Lively aromas of black raspberry, minerals, flowers, camphor and spicy oak. Energetic, bright and sweet, with lovely spicy lift to flavors of red berry preserves, herbs and mocha. Offers impressive balance and energy, with no rough edges, finishing tangy, focused and long, with delicate tannins. The garnacha vines are reportedly more than a century old."

Description:

WINE:
"La Cova dels Vins is owned by Fraancesc Perello who studied enology in Falset and Tarragona and in 1997 joined the technical team at Celler de Capcanes, as a winemaker. La Cova dels Vins project began in the winter of 2002. While pruning at Els Masos vineyard, Francesc's father was telling stories about their ancestors and commented that it would be great to make a single wine from that vineyard as it was done in the past. Els Masos is planted to 100 year old Garnacha on licorella schiste soils."

"Due to the small production of this vineyard, it was decided to incorporate some Garnacha and other varieties from other vineyards. The estate is located in the DO Montsant. The vineyards are located in Falset and Capcanes, between 300 and 700m above sea level. The wines are characterized by several microclimates, all of them of Mediterranean influence, and with drastic temperature fluctuations."

"The 2009 Ombra is a blend of equal parts Garnacha, Cariñena and Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 9 months in French and American oak." -Importer

REGION:
"This region takes its name from the majestic Montsant escarpment, reached by a 45 minute drive inland from the city of Tarragona, a one-time capital of the Roman empire. Once belonging to the D.O. Tarragona, the D.O. Montsant was founded in 2001 and comprises of over 5,000 acres of registered vineyards."

"While it is considerably larger than its interior neighbor (Priorat has less than 4,000 acres), it does not share the distinct terroir of Priorat. Montsant's soil type is a mixture of granitic sand, calcerous soil, large pebbles and shards of slate, which are found in varying amounts throughout the appellation. This wide diversity of soil types is reflected in the soil color which ranges from bright orange to snow white to earthy grey."

"Montsant receives more annual sun exposure than Priorat, but shares its temperate Mediterranean climate with little rainfall. Like Priorat, Montsant boasts many, if not more, of the low-yielding centennial vines that are so prized in both wine producing regions." -Importer
