2005 ELYSE MORISOLI CABERNET SAUVIGNON
"The vineyard is in the heart of the Rutherford bench. The wine is rich in fruit and tannins, but a bit clumsy, with a chunky, tannic mouthfeel and jammy, direct blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors. Not ready for drinking now, but well-made, and should age well, as Cabs from this stretch tend to have a long life." 92 points Wine Enthusiast
"The vineyard is located between Niebaum and Manley Lanes, at the base of Mt. Saint John and in the heart of the Rutherford Bench. This area has a worldwide reputation for growing great Cabernet Sauvignon. The light, dusty, gravely soil here produces grapes with vibrant flavor and impeccable balance. The resulting wines express equal parts power and finesse. An Elyse wine from this vineyard will have great longevity but is also very drinkable when released. Each year, since 1986, we produce a Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel from this very special place in Napa Valley." -Winery
"In 1987, Ray & Nancy started Elyse Winery with 286 cases of Zinfandel from the Morisoli Vineyard, which is still a cornerstone vineyard source for the winery. After a decade of nomadic winemaking at various custom crush facilities, in 1997 they purchased a small winery and vineyard on Hoffman Lane, the home of Elyse Winery and tasting room." -Winery

2008 SHAFER CHARDONNAY RED SHOULDER RANCH
"After many years of cult stardom, Shafer's Red Shoulder Ranch still rules. It performs the difficult feat of combining powerful richness with dry elegance. The pineapple, Meyer lemon and kaffir lime flavors are undergirded with a steely mineralty, while oak and lees add rich tiers of interest. The 2008 is tarter than usual, making it a good foil against lobster risotto or grilled salmon with a tropical fruit salsa topping." 93 Points Wine Enthusiast
"In an irregular year for North Coast Chardonnay, Shaferâs 2008 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch is a winner. Elegant notes of orange blossoms, nectarines, pears and honeysuckle jump from the glass of this crisp, medium-bodied, richly fruity wine. Fresh, lively and flavorful, this impressive Chardonnay can be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years." 92 Points Robert Parker
"Intense and spicy, delivering a mix of floral scents, with notes of taut pear and green apple. Full-bodied and graceful, ending with a pithy, leesy edge and a long, focused finish. Best from 2011 through 2016. 6,000 cases made. -JL" 90 points Wine Spectator
"On 68 acres near the northern tip of San Francisco Bay, Shafer harvests fruit for this classic single vineyard wine. The Red Shoulder Ranch vineyard in the Carneros region offers a long, consistently cool growing season, which is ideal for retaining acidity in Chardonnay fruit. To focus on varietal flavors, Shafer uses only wild yeast for fermentation and does not put the wine through malolactic fermentation."
"Shafer's Carneros vineyard is home to countless gophers who love to feast on young vine roots. To contain this problem, Shafer has erected owl nesting boxes and hawk perches to encourage day and night rodent patrol. 'The Red-shouldered hawks and other birds of prey do such an outstanding job, we named the vineyard in their honor,' says Doug Shafer."
"'The 2009 offers lush, luxurious aromas and flavors of melon, honeysuckle, apricot, pineapple and flint all held together with bright acidity, good structure and elegant balance,' says Shafer Winemaker Elias Fernandez." -Winery
