Description:

2008 Firriato Etna Rosso:
"The 2008 Etna Rosso is a wonderful introduction to the wines of the Etna. This Nerello Mascalese-Nerello Cappuccio blend reveals gorgeous, translucent red fruit, flowers and spices in a soft, approachable style that is irresistible. Sweet notes of mint and flowers linger on the elegant finish. The Etna Rosso compares quite favorably with a top-notch villages-level Burgundy at a fraction of the price. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014."

"I have to say I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Firriato this year. Across the board this is a very solid line-up, which is particularly impressive considering the estate's production is now nearly 5 million bottles per year spread across numerous properties in Sicily. Firriato is among the new entrants in the Etna, and those wines are among the highlights." - 90 Points - Antonio Galloni - The Wine Advocate

VITICULTURE:
"Nerello Mascalese 80% and Nerello Cappuccio 20% Territory of Castiglione di Sicilia (Catania, Sicily) Loamy –sandy of volcanic origin, highly draining North eastern side of the Volcano (500/600 metres above sea level)" -Winemaker

VINIFICATION:
"The vinification carried out in controlled-temperature steel tanks in accordance to red wines tradition. The malolactic fermentation is carried out. 6 months in durmast barriques" -Winemaker

WINE:
"Bright ruby red with lively shades of purple. It affords typically mineral, ripe and elegant notes that unfold alternating intense and distinct scents of blackcurrants, prune jam, black cherries, liquorice, pepper and wilted violet. Well-balanced and harmonious, it develops with energy and liveliness; it is rich, warm and refined, with suave tannins of extraordinary lineage; the lingering aroma and rewarding and juicy finale are noteworthy."

"It is a classical wine that fully expresses its extraordinary terroir, namely that of Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano; the unique sharpness and overwhelming and austere character are blended with the enjoyable exquisiteness." -Winery

VARIETIES:
"Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are grown almost exclusively in the Sicily and Sardinia regions of Italy. An Italian study published in 2008 determined that these varieties are most closely related genetically to Sangiovese."

The Wine Spectator also scored this wine 86 Points.

2006 Vallone Flaminio Brindisi Riserva:
"Bright red. Pungent red cherry, red berry, minerals and dried rose on the nose. Vibrant and well delineated, with a sappy, youthful core of red fruit and mineral flavors. A pretty wine that finishes fresh and smooth, with an attractive light touch. Very well done." 90 points - Ian Dagata - International Wine Cellar

WINE:
"Thanks to a well-crafted cuvee of the negroamaro, malvasia nera and montepulciano varieties from the best Tenuta Flaminio vineyards, largely still trained to the traditional head-trained gobelet method, we can offer a cru Brindisi Rosso in every sense of the term."

"While it certainly exhibits the individual characteristics of its component varieties, the malvasia nera's aromatic elegance, the negroamaro's structure and power, and the montepulciano's velvety fruitiness, it is also true that Vigna Flaminio Rosso testifies to the exceptional viticultural qualities of the Brindisi-area terroir." -Winemaker

ESTATE:
"Agricole Vallone was founded in 1934 as a family-run winery. Today, it is directed by Vittoria and Maria Teresa Vallone, who have relied on the technical assistance of viticulturalist Donato Lazzari for many years now, and on the winemaking guidance of consultant Graziana Grassini. The administrative offices are in Lecce, while the growing and winemaking are located in the areas covered by Salice Salentino DOC, Brindisi DOC, Salento IGT, as well as Colline Brindisine DOP. These are the zones traditionally prized for their exceptional grape- and olive-growing environmental conditions, all of them in the province of Brindisi, in the heart of the Salento peninsula."

"The three estates cover a total of 600 hectares, with 170 planted to vineyard, 120 to olives, and the remainder to other agricultural crops, in particular artichokes and vegetables, which are distributed nationally and used in the food processing industry. They are: the Flaminio estate, in the Brindisi area, with 310 hectares, of which 110 are under vine; the Iore estate, in the area of San Pancrazio Salentino, with 40 hectares of vineyard; and Castelserranova, in the Carovigno area, with 312 hectares, of which 20 are being currently planted to vineyard." -Winery

This wine was also scored 88 Points by the Wine Advocate and 82 points by the Wine Spectator.
