2006 San Roman Toro

"Dark, tight and masculine smelling, San Roman is once again one of the two or three best wines from Toro. This vintage is black, extracted and super ripe, but it maintains a fine level of balance and more than adequate freshness. Flavors of coconut, vanilla and chocolate announce generous new oak, as does mocha and espresso on the finish. Heady but ready; ageable for another 5–8 years." 94 Points - Wine Enthusiast

"The 2006 San Roman is 100% Tinta de Toro aged for 24 months in French and American oak. Aromas of smoke, incense, scorched earth, espresso, and blackberry jump from the glass. Full-bodied and already revealing some complexity, this opulent offering is packed with succulent fruit and enough structure to evolve for 3-4 years. Drink this pleasure-bent effort from 2013 to 2021 if not longer." -93 Points - Jay Miller - Wine Advocate

"Rich and deep, this plush red shows complex flavors of blackberry, blueberry, dried fig, dark chocolate and licorice. This has full, ripe tannins and a sweet finish. Modern and alluring. Drink now through 2016. 5,950 cases made." -93 Points - Wine Spectator

"Inky ruby. Knockout nose combines sweet dark fruit preserves, smoky minerals, vanilla, tobacco and dark chocolate. Suave and velvety but also juicy, with superb inner-mouth perfume and depth to its cherry-vanilla, cassis, violet and smoke flavors. Finishes with compelling sweetness, an echo of floral pastilles and suave tannins. Owner/winemaker Eduardo Garc i a told me that "the key to a fresh Toro wine is to have enough clay in your soil to retain water, otherwise the fruit has a roasted character and lacks life." 92 Points - Josh Raynolds - International Wine Cellar

"Bodegas y Vinedos Maurodos owns 55 hectares in the villages of Villaester and San Roman de Hornija, planted mainly with Tinta de Toro, which come from the same family as Tempranillo, but adapted to Toro over centuries. This adaptation has lead to smaller berries which in turn lead to deeper color and more intense aroma and structure than typical of Tempranillo from other regions. It is possible to separate two different soil areas, in Villaester the soil has sand and clay with some gravels, while in San Roman the soil is more stony."

"Grapes mature sooner in San Roman than Villaester. The vines range in age up to 70 years old and are pruned to grow as bushes rather than on vertical trellises. On the vines the grapes hang low under a rounded canopy of leaves that protects them from scorching summer temperatures. This type of pruning concentrates the flavor of the grapes as it naturally limits the yield of grapes for each vine."

2006 Cascina Bruciata Barbaresco

"Elegant and ethereal, this streamlined Barbaresco boasts a luminous ruby color and aromas of dried raspberry, licorice, dried mint and balsam notes. The mouthfeel is dominated by bright acidity and firm tannins that need five more years of cellar aging to soften." 90 Points - Wine Enthusiast

"The vines for our barbaresco were planted more than 30 years ago by the present owner’s grandfather. like all the estate’s vineyards, these nebbiolo vines are planted in the prestigious Rio Sordo cru and their deep roots produce wines that excel in quality and personality in every vintage."

"Fragrant floral aromas, ripe and fleshy, with a delicious medley of juicy plum, black cherry and raspberry scent, finishing with a rich aftertaste and a long run of berry flavors highlighted by a toffee scent. this wine was born to be paired with only the best quality porcini mushrooms, sheep’s milk cheese and a beautiful evening with people you love." -Winemaker

"Our vineyards are located in Rio Sordo, one of the most prestigious and classic crus of the Barbaresco wine region, and have always produced unique and elegant wines. Carlo Balbo aims to bring out the best expression of the Rio Sordo cru in his wines and to produce bottles that incite emotions, highlighting their authentic personality."

"To this end, Carlo uses a precise and maniacal vineyard management protocol, oriented to an absolute respect for his natural environment and a low, but balanced, crop production depending on the conditions of each vintage. In the cellar, we focus on rigorous management of the fermentation processes with a medium-long skin contact period to extract the maximum quality potential from the grapes. The ageing in barriques and/or barrels is monitored meticulously and the duration of such is calibrated to enhance the balance between the concentration of structure and aromatic elegance." -Winery

This wine was also scored 88 Points by the Wine Spectator.
